Nursery Update

A big welcome to all the new children and families who have joined us this term. On the first day back, we were excited to talk about our Christmas holidays, and

share with our friends, what lovely gifts Santa brought us. We have started our new topic of ‘Treehouse Tales’, and have become familiar with the characters of

Teddy and Floppy Bunny. We all created a collage, and have spent time looking at the pictures and answering questions. We have searched in class for big items like

Teddy, and small items like Floppy Bunny. We have continued learning our sounds, and have focussed on e, h and r. We are getting confident in identifying the

sounds, singing the songs and performing the actions. In numeracy we have been learning all about the number 3, by taking part in lots of different activities. We

all enjoyed visiting the hall for PE, and practised starting and stopping with the sound of the tambourine. The best part was playing ball with a partner. We

rolled the ball, and tried really hard to throw and catch it too. We are looking forward to more ball skills work over the coming weeks. We also loved making teddy

bear face biscuits, which were delicious! Please remember to send sound books into Nursery every Monday, and library books every Thursday. If anyone has any spare

clothes they would like to donate (especially socks and trousers), they would be most appreciated. Thank you

Rec Update RW

The class have settled back to school after the Christmas break and are enjoying our new topic. They all enjoyed talking and writing about their holidays and what

they had for Christmas. We have spent time drawing Teddy and Floppy Bunny, and discussing the pictures from their first story. We have been recapping single letter

sounds, really focusing on how to write each letter. Last week we investigated items that float and sink, and this week we have looked at how different materials

on a ramp can effect a car rolling down it. The children have been fantastic at talking about what they see and think, and are getting better at asking questions.

Also this week we have been counting in 2s and pairing things, and we are beginning to say what we like in Welsh. Next week we will be junk modelling so please

send in anything suitable, thank you.

Rec/Year1 SJ Update

We are really enjoying our new topic “Chinese New Year”. It was great fun taste testing our Chinese buffet and making tally charts and graphs to find our

favourites. We are learning two Chinese stories - the zodiac story which has helped us learn ordinal numbers and the story of the magic brush which we will be

rewriting using time words. The children have created Chinese lanterns and zigzag dragons for display and been learning the dragon and lion dances in PE. We have

also been using our Aled Apple books to find out about Oliver Onion and his broken kite, writing sentences, spelling tricky words and remembering punctuation.

Reception have been discussing the big picture stories about Teddy and Floppy Bunny who are learning how to stay safe crossing the road so this week they have been

investigation ramps with different surfaces to see which ones help the cars travel fastest! We have all been using green for go and red for stop to practice

letter formation and handwriting too!!

Year 1 NB Update

In year one we have had an exciting few weeks at the start of term. The children all really enjoyed our Chinese food tasting which was a lovely way of starting our

topic of Chinese New Year. They practised their data handling skills when thinking about which foods were their favourite. They all enjoyed working in pairs to

order the animals from the story of how the years got their names for Chinese New Year. We have been learning about lots of exciting Chinese New Year customs

including the Chinese New Year parade and have been moving like the dragon and lion in PE. They have been learning the story of 'The magic brush' and are

beginning to verbally re-tell it using actions. We have been practicing our adding and taking away skills. The children are learning number bonds to 5 or 10.

Year 2 AC & Year 2 CH.

A busy start to our new topic "Dinosaur Planet". We have thought about what we want to find out and what we already know. We have named different dinosaurs and

then put these words into alphabetical order. We have begun to think about report writing and have researched facts ready. For our number work we have been working

on measuring different lengths. We have also looked at the height of dinosaurs and have used the trundle wheel outdoors to show how big the dinosaurs were. We have

also been writing numbers beyond 100 and explaining hundreds, tens and units. We have begun to use a thermometer to explore different temperatures. We are working

hard with our Welsh. Every day we do Ddrilio to practice sentence patterns, Welsh vocabulary and asking and answering questions. We have also drawn pictures to

show what clothes we wear for different seasons and labelled the drawings. We have used the I-pad for Hwb and used images of dinosaurs to write facts that we know.

For our art work we have made moving dinosaurs using split pins and we have painted pictures of dinosaurs. We have begun to use natural materials to make different

landscapes.

Year 3 / 4 CR, RG, ER update

We’ve jumped straight into this new topic of Scrumdidlyumptious - with plenty of gusto. In our language sessions we have been looking at instructional texts and

identifying the key features - discussing what goes into a good set of instructions. The pupils have created a success criteria and have also undertaken text

marking activities. In maths we are focusing on place value, comparing and ordering numbers as well as rounding numbers. The children have used their knowledge of

place value to complete various written and practical tasks. Our topic focuses on health and food and our science work has involved the pupils discussing the

different food types and groups as well as investigating effects of drugs and alcohol on our bodies. This included a visit from PC Hodges. In Welsh we have been

using our drilio sessions to recap previous sentence patterns so that we can share information about ourselves with others.

Year 4/ 5 / 6 ME, CA, JE update

Well another crazy and wonderful fortnight in Year 5/6.

We have welcomed back Mr Elias' after the safe arrival of his daughter Alba. Congratulations Sir! The children have focussed on their new topic of Welsh Icons and

have undertaken fun and inspiring activities to engage themselves. We have chosen pictures of Welsh Icons and recreated them in the style of Andy Warhol's famous

Marilyn Monroe pictures. Lots of colour, lots of paint and lots of mess!!! The children have enjoyed a little poetry and are now focussing on biographies within

their literacy work, eventually enabling them to write a biography on their friends. We are focussing on time within our numeracy and the 24 hour clock in

particular. Please have a chat with your child and get them to tell you the time as much as possible using all formats. If there are any problems with the homework

tasks, please see your class teacher as soon as possible.

Thanks for your continued support, Team 5/6
