[School Closure Due to Swine Flu]

[SAMPLE LETTER]

[This template is intended to be used when notifying parents that students are dismissed from school until further notice. Work with your local county health officials to finalize your letter to parents.]

Dear Students, Families, and Staff:

[ADD COUNTY NAME HERE] County health officials, in cooperation with the Oregon Public Health Division, have ordered all students to be dismissed from [ADD NAME OF SCHOOL]. This order is due to the diagnosis of a case or cases of H1N1 Swine Influenza school employees or students. All students are dismissed immediately until further notice and should stay home.

Student closures may last for several days to reduce close contact among children and employees to reduce the spread of H1N1 Swine Influenza.

Because H1N1 Swine Influenza appears to spread from person to person, during this period, people with cases or suspected cases of H1N1 Swine Influenza and those who have been in contact with a patient with suspected H1N1 Swine Influenza should avoid large gatherings of people. These include unnecessary trips to locations such as shopping malls, movie theaters, or community centers.

Contact your health care provider if you or a family member develops symptoms suggestive of influenza symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat and body aches. Intestinal symptoms are less commonly associated with this H1N1 Swine Influenza.

Here are some tips for protecting yourself from infection and helping family members who may be sick:

• Cover your own nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and encourage everyone else to do the same. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If a tissue is not available, use your sleeve or elbow, not your hand. Keep tissues and a trash bag within reach of a sick person.

• Be sure everyone in your home washes their hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• Anyone who may be ill should drink a lot of liquid (juice, water).

• Sick persons should be kept as comfortably as possible and get as much rest as possible.

• Anyone who is ill should stay home. Others should avoid close contact with anyone who is ill.
