Meeting Minutes

April 12, 2011

President Sorina Abernathy called the meeting to order at 9:05am. The meeting was held at Washington High School in room 128. Twenty three people were in attendance.

Presentation by Heather Adams and Matt Miller and members of WHS Academic Teams. Mrs Adams outlined the format of the Academic Decathlon and Science Olympiad. Mr Miller outlined the format of the Math Team. Several students from the teams commented on the successes of the teams and how being a member of the teams have helped them in their current studies. The subjects touched on in competitions range from math to literature, science, music, economics and many other areas. All academic teams are open to all students in grades 9 – 12, and all levels of ability. The academic teams have had a very successful year in competitions. All academic teams receive financial support from the PTA.

Executive Committee Reports

Secretary – The minutes of the March 8, 2011 were corrected to reflect the correct spelling of the Volunteer of the Year for 2011 - Sandy Worley. The amended minutes were approved.

Treasurer – Laura Gregory discussed the possibility of changing the amount of money given to various clubs next year. Evaluating the clubs needs, and increasing or decreasing the amounts donated, to coincide better with each groups’ needs. The treasurers’ report was approved.

Staff Comments

Mrs. Sue McDermott, Counseling Dept. Chair circulated and reviewed the attached April Counseling Update for PTA. She discussed the Youth for Five Seasons Leadership Conference applications which are due on April 22 for current sophomores. AP testing will be May 2 through May 13. Junior Conferences are still available. Teacher choice for next year will be available April 18 – 22. Senior recognition night is Monday, April 25 at 6:30pm. Dr. Hardesty, Counseling Dept. commented that incoming freshman should contact her after May 1 to select a specific teacher. College Planning was discussed. The brochure which came out in September received many complements. Possible changes to enhance the “Student to Student” lunch were discussed.

Dr. Ralph Plagman, Principal, has filled three vacancies for teacher and counselor positions for the 2011-2012 school year. The positions filled so far are one counselor, vocal music instructor and a special education instructor.

Committee Reports

Post Prom – Lisa Rhatigan indicated a need for additional donations. The committee currently has raised only half of the $13,000 needed to put on the post prom event. Prom is April 30, 2011.

Cookie Sales – Next cookie sale is Friday April 29 from 7:30 – 11:30.

Fundraising – Blue Chip and the Membership committee chairs will be combined next year.

Grounds – April 22nd is Earth Day.

Hospitality – Teacher Appreciation Lunch is Tuesday, May 3. Need volunteers to bring salads.

Trophy Display Cases – Thanks to Kathryn Brokaw for cleaning cases before MoShow.

Volunteer Coordinatior – Turn in volunteer hours to Darcy Rouse-Traut

New Business

The PTA executive officers for 2011 – 2012 were voted on and approved:

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45am. The next meeting will be held at the home of Sorina Abernathy. The meeting will be a salad luncheon at 10:00am on May 10, 2011. Please bring a salad (for 8) to share. Address: 357 Woodland Dr. SE.
