ALTERNATIVE LEARNING PLAN / SERVICE DELIVERY OPTIONS

MATH: CLUSTER GROUPING for ACCELERATION—Emily joined a small group of 5th grade students in another 5th grade classroom (Mrs. P), to complete the Middle School PRE-ALGEBRA course. At the conclusion of the course, Emily took an Algebra placement test designed and administered by the Middle School and passed it! Emily is eligible for ALGEBRA as a 6th grader.

ENHANCED LITERACY--

CLASSROOM DIFFERENTIATION: Emily is encouraged to read a variety of genres. She is also encouraged to read books that are adequately challenging.

ENHANCED READING RESOURCE ROOM: Emily joined a small group of advanced readers for daily guided-reading instruction with Ms. F. Units of study were designed to include the 6th and 7th grade DODEA standards matched to students’ interests. Genres included poetry, drama, novels, short stories, film, lyrics, journalistic articles, and non-fiction. Units consisted of author studies, genre studies and thematic studies. Various forms of speaking and writing, writing for publication, advanced technology applications, and artistic forms were among the possible products. The emphasis of the course was on increasing student ability to critically and emotionally engage with text.

TEXTS: The Giver, Animal Farm, The Pearl, A Christmas Carol, The Little Prince, “Step on a Crack (play),” Peter Pan, “Harrison Bergeron (short story),”

Gattica (film), The Phantom of the Opera (film), various poetry, The Diary of a Young Girl, I am an American: the True Story of Japanese Internment, other WWII literature.

WRITING FORMS: Persuasive essay, poetry, drama, diary, memoir

INDIVIDUALIZED SERVICES—Ms. F. will work with Sarah on work study habits to include how to evaluate and prioritize tasks. She will be “compacted” out of Pre-Algebra on Mondays as needed to work with Ms. F.

UPDATE: Emily’s work habits improved during the first quarter so there was no need for Ms. F to work specifically on work habits

( NOTE: This is a “rolling” document. Following the 5th grade plan, one would find the 4th grade plan and the 3rd grade plan, the years in which Emily was identified as gifted with strengths in ELA and Math.
