Sixth Grade Science

Sixth Grade Science

Mr. Spangler

Welcome to sixth grade science! This year we will study scientific processes, earth and space science, physical science and life science. All the topics are from the new sixth grade Ohio Core Standards for science.

Each day in science, students will need, a folder with 2 pockets (any color), loose leaf lined paper and a pencil. It may be helpful if the folder also has prongs in it. The students may also wish to have their own glue, scissors and colored pencils. Work is to be done in pencil. Assignments completed in ink may not be accepted. You may have a colored pen to use for grading or editing. Students will receive a soft cover science text book to be used in class and at home. Students are allowed and encouraged to write in the textbooks. The students will need to bring their text book to class every day.

Communication between school and home is very important. Please feel free to contact me at any time. There are great benefits to parents being aware of what is happening in school. Reading the class blog is an easy way to find out what is happening in science.

Students are required to write homework assignments or other important information in their planner every science class. The information will be on the board before class starts so that the students have an opportunity to copy it in their planner. A student should never leave science class without filling in their planner.

Grades in science are determined by a point system. The percentage grade can be determined by dividing the points received by the number of points possible for the assignment.

Assignment Point Values:

Homework: 10 Points

Quizzes: 50 Points

Class Work Folder Grades: 25 Points

Tests: 200

The point value for projects will be communicated when they are assigned.

Science class requires cooperation, good behavior, and attention to detail. Cooperation and effort in science lab activities as well as completion of lab sheets is very important and counts toward the class work portion of a student’s grade in science. Students who do not comply with lab safety rules will not receive credit for the activity and will not be allowed to participate in the next lab. Lab sheets for these activities will need to be completed by the students, who will observe, but not participate in, the activity.

Homework is occasionally assigned in science class. Many times the homework will be will be completed in the science textbook. Late homework will not be accepted.

Class work is the material we complete or discuss as a class. The class work will be collected on the day of tests/quizzes and graded on completion. Students that complete the work and turn it in on time earn a very good grade on class work.

A test or quiz is given about every 2 weeks in science class. A review for the test/quiz will be given to the students a few days before the assessment. We will use the review to prepare for the test the day before the assessment. It is very important that students study for the test/quizzes.

If a student is absent from science class, arrangements can be made with Mr. Spangler to make up the work. It is the student’s responsibility to take steps to get caught up if he/she misses class.

I am looking forward to a fantastic and successful year of science. Please remember to contact me if you have any questions.
