Hands-On Science Fair

WCS Grade 5

What is it?

A 1 hour Hands-On Science Fair where pairs of 5th graders present inquiry-based experiments to 3rd graders. Students rotate around the room to 10 stations manned by 5th graders.

Why?

• Expose students to a variety of scientific concepts (surface tension, molecular structure, electricity, density, etc.)

• Provide exposure to inquiry method of learning: Ask questions, hypothesize, gather data, draw conclusions

• Give students practice explaining scientific concepts

• Because we all learn best when we teach someone else

• Because Science is amazing and fun!

Who? 5th graders in pairs presenting to 3rd graders

When? June 4 (practice with 5th grade before then)

Is this graded? Yes. 5th graders will receive a green grade based on

1. Preparedness for practice presentation and 3rd grade presentation (all supplies ready on time).

2. Sign with name of experiment and question (in color, neat).

3. Behavior (good use of time, politeness during others’ presentations, being a good role model to 3rd grade)

4. Quality of presentation (asking the question, guiding the lab)

5. Quality of explanation of concept (in a language that the average 3rd grader would understand.)

6. Time used (Experiment was close to 5 minutes in length.)

7. Division of labor (You and your partner each contributed.)

What exactly do we do during those 5 minutes?

✓ Introduction

Yourself, their name

Experiment title

✓ Question

Allow them to wonder/hypothesize

✓ Run experiment

✓ “Wonder” some more…why did this happen?

✓ Explain the science behind your experiment

✓ Thank them for coming

Tasks:

✓ Read through the experiment

✓ Assign who is doing what during the 5 minutes

✓ Gather materials

✓ Make sign

✓ Practice doing the experiment at home

✓ Practice what you’ll say

✓ If needed, gather additional ideas from the internet
