ENG 335: SF as Social Criticism Fall 2017 Examination #3 [200 Points]For your final examination in the course, you will write a 3-4-page [1,200-1,500 word] typed, double-spaced essay on Allen Steele’s Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration. The essay will be submitted in hard copy at 1:00 on Tuesday, December 12, during our final examination meeting in Root Hall A-275. Below, I list a few possible essay topics; however, as I explained in our class discussions, if you are particularly interested in a different approach, send me an e-mail with your proposed topic, and I will reply with instructions. When we discuss the final chapters of the novel on Tuesday, December 5, you will have an opportunity to ask questions about approaching any of the suggested topics. Here are the suggested topics:Write an essay in which you discuss the function in the novel of one of the following characters. The term "function" may be interpreted rather loosely here. How does the character help to develop a principal thematic concern or conflict in the novel? Or how does the character help us to understand a philosophical position being promoted by Steele through his novel? Or how does the character help us to understand a point of social criticism being developed by Steele through his novel?Choose one of the following characters:Robert E. LeeColonel Gilbert “Gill” ReeseWendy GuntherCarlos MonteroChris LevinOf course, a discussion of any of these characters would be developed at least in part through commentary on the characters influence on and being influenced by other characters, but your focus should be on the important role played by the character of your choice in development of a thematic concern, a conflict, or a philosophical position espoused by Steele. Please note: If you choose Gil Reese [who dies rather early in the novel], you must address his influence on later developments, including events through “Book Eight: Glorious Destiny.” Obviously, linking Reese to the leadership theme would allow you to discuss his influence even beyond his death. Discuss the development of a single theme in the novel: Leadership, Conquest and Colonization, the Frontier vs. Civilization, Coming of Age.What philosophical or political statement is Steele making in Coyote? Does the arrival of the starship WHSS Glorious Destiny [whose full title is Seeking Glorious Destiny for the Greater Good of Social Collectivism] and its crews revise assumptions that you might have made about Steele’s political philosophy earlier in the novel? Define Steele’s political philosophy by citing examples from throughout the novel to support your claims. Please review the instructions for formatting your paper in the posted essay assignments on The Sparrow and The Man in the High Castle.Due Date: Tuesday, December 12.Submit in Hard Copy at our final examination meeting at 1:00 in Root Hall A-275. ................
