7th Grade Life Science

Course Description: Knowledge of the placement, structure and function of the human body is developed. Practical applications and hands-on labs promote deeper understanding and usefulness of course knowledge. Relationships between human anatomy/physiology and medicine is emphasized, including diseases and disorders.

Units of Study

|1- Organization of the Human Body, Cells and Chemistry |6- Endocrine, Immune & Lymphatic System |

|2- Tissues and Integumentary System |7- Cardiovascular & Respiratory System |

|3- Skeletal System & Joints |8- Digestive & Urinary Systems |

|4- Muscular System |9- Reproductive System and Growth and Development |

|5- Nervous & Special Senses | |

Anatomy Grading Scale

All assignments, assessments, and projects will be posted on the website weekly.

Grades: Your grade will be determined on a percentage system of the following categories. *Please note that these percentages are subject to change by the Cobb County School District.

• Tests 40%

• Labs/Dissections & Projects 20%

• Classwork/HW 10%

• Quizzes 15%

• Final Exam 15%

Grade Reporting Procedures

ParentVUE and StudentVUE has the most accurate reflection of student’s progress in the class.

Class Supplies

Science requires the recording of observations; therefore, class notebook, textbook, pencils, pens, and planner will be required daily.

• 3 ring Binder with 8 dividers

• Colored Pencils, pens and/or pencils

• Note cards & notebook paper

Absences, Late Work, and Homework

Homework: (Students should keep all graded materials throughout the term.) Classwork and Homework should be kept in class binder for reference. The last day to turn in homework/packets for full credit is the day before the unit test or by designated due date. Failure to do so will result in loss of points or a zero. No homework for the unit will be accepted once we have moved on to the next unit.

Makeup/Assignment Policy

It is the student’s sole responsibility to make contact with the teacher to request and initiate all make-up work for any excused absence. Requests must be made the FIRST class back after the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to make up ANY TESTS and QUIZZES within one week of the assignment or a grade of zero “0” will be given.

➢ Tests-Since tests are scheduled well in advance, students are expected to take the test on the test date even if he/she was absent the day before the test.

➢ Homework-ohHomeLate homework will result in loss of points or a zero.

Dissecting labs are expected to be made up; please see me or check the blog for an alternative assignment.

Teacher/Student/Parent/Guardian Communication

Students with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact their teacher after class or during homeroom. Parents/Guardians with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact us in one of the following ways:

Phone: (678) 331-3961 ext. 1207 Email: (easiest and quickest): Christina.deleon@

**IF you have any contact changes/additions, please inform me so communication can continue seamlessly. **

Opportunities for individual student tutoring will be discussed and arranged with the teacher.

Behavioral Expectations and Consequences

Expectations:

1. Be Present in class: Attendance is critical to success in this class

2. Be Punctual: If you are late—get a pass or tardy slip

3. Be Prepared for class (ie…paper/pencil etc…) and be alert in class. Have fun, ask questions and get involved.

4. Be Polite to teacher, classmates, and respect the classroom and lab equipment

5. Be Positive: Come in with a great attitude, have fun, work hard, ask questions and get involved.

6. Cell phones will only be used in class for instructional purposes. If you are using at other times you will receive a detention. Any additional offenses will result in a referral to the office. You are here to learn, not text /tweet/Instagram/Snap or play games.

7. You are a young adult and want to be treated as such—earn it!

8. Honesty and Integrity are extremely important.

Consequences:

Failure to follow classroom procedures may result in any of the following depending upon the severity of the offense: Verbal warning, Teacher/Student conference, Teacher detention, Parental contact, Referral

Any assignment containing any plagiarized work will receive 0 points (that includes any work copied, etc., from another student or source.) That means that the entire assignment (i.e. test, lab report, homework, research paper, or project) will receive a 0. Both the giver and receiver of copied work will receive the zero.

Failure to adhere to safe laboratory practice will result in earning 0 points for the lab and the loss of laboratory privileges. Proper class behavior is expected even when a substitute is in the room.

Labs/Dissections: Labs are extremely important to the anatomy portion of anatomy/physiology class. We will generally be active in lab. Labs assignments will be given and their grades will be weighted as such. You will have an extensive lab practical at midterm and at the end of the term.

Dissections: Throughout the semester, we will be dissecting parts of various organisms, for example, sheep brain, kidney and heart, and cow eyeball. This part of the class is not optional, and you must participate as these dissections will affect your grade. Inappropriate and immature behavior will have consequences.

Lab time is NOT play time. Any student violating lab rules at any time will automatically be given 0 points for the lab, will receive a citation and will not be allowed to make up the lab. Students with inappropriate dress on lab days will not be allowed to participate. Failure to come prepared to participate in lab activities will be subject to disciplinary action. It is assumed students have chosen to take anatomy/physiology class because of a high level of interest in the content. You must successfully complete a laboratory safety test and have lab safety rules signed before you will be allowed to participate in any laboratory activities.
