Topics include polynomial functions, theory of equations, trigonometric functions, sequences and series, exponential and logarithmic functions, parametric equations, vectors and polar coordinates. A limited quantity of calculus concepts will be covered at the end of the course. A graphing calculator will be used throughout the course as concepts are explored and developed. This course meets the CSU and UC university entrance requirements in addition to the California and San Jose Unified School District Standards for Pre-calculus.Rules and Expectations: Students are expected to know and adhere to all School and District policies and behavior standards outlined in the Student and Parent Information Handbook of San Jose Unified and the Leland Student & Parent Handbook.Assessments: Doing quality daily HW will help you to prepare for assessments. Most assessments will be unannounced. Major assessments are given at most once per grading period. Mini-assessments missed due to excused absences must be made up during advisory and/or lunch at the end of the grading period. There will only be one make up per grading period. A zero will be recorded in lieu of a grade to remind students to make up their missed assessments. Once make ups are completed and graded, the earned grade will replace the zero as long as the absence has been excused. Assessments not made up by the end of each grading period will remain a zero on the semester grade. Calculators are not allowed on assessments, and should not be used on homework assignments unless authorized in advance. Assessments missed due to unexcused absences or school suspension, cannot be made up at all.Homework: Homework is assigned on a daily basis. Homework assignments are worth 5 points and are due at the beginning of the class period on the following school day. Late work is not accepted, no exceptions. Missing or late assignments are awarded a ZERO. Students are responsible for correcting all odd numbered problems with answers in the back of the book. Two versions of the homework will be collected daily in Google Classroom: one will be submitted before the class and the other must be submitted separately no later than shortly after class. Together, these two versions of the homework will be graded on completeness (worth 3 points), plus two problems will be checked for correct answers and correct supporting work (worth 1 point each). Students who have incorrect homework answers must copy the correct answers and supporting work during class. Students are responsible for requesting to see the supporting work after they have corrected their answers. Don’t forget to ask for the problems that you need to see!Absences/Make-up Work: If a student is suspended from class or from school or an absence is unexcused, work cannot be made up. Assignments missed due to excused absences must be made up within the same number of days as the number of days missed. Unexcused absences will earn a zero if the absence ia not excused. The teacher will not be held responsible for reminding absent students about the homework assignments that are due. Students must turn in their make-up assignments within the allowed time. Students must consult a classmate or the teacher’s web page in order to make up the missed work. Ask classmates for a copy of the class notes. Assessments must be made up during advisory and/or lunch, i.e. outside of regular class time.Tardy Policy: You must be in class before the bell rings to avoid being marked tardy.Participation: All students will be expected to answer questions during class discussions. All students are expected to take notes and to work on practice problems and assignments in class when given time to do so. Written Work Format Policy: All students are expected to do their own homework on a daily basis. On every homework problem, write the original problem first, write out all the steps until you find the answer, then box your answer. Please write steps and answers in columns on the page. Whenever you work with another student, make sure that the work you turn in is unique. Papers with identical work may be considered cheating.Grading Policy: Grades are based on the following: mini-assessments are worth 5%, each of three mid-terms are 20%, homework is worth 15% and the final exam is worth 20%. The grading scale is as follows:lowest A is 93.0%lowest C is 73.0%lowest A- is 90.0%lowest C- is 70.0%lowest B+ is 87%lowest D+ is 67%lowest B is 83.0%lowest D is 63.0%lowest B- is 80%lowest D- is 60.0%lowest C+ is 77%below 60% is FGrades are not rounded for the above grading scale. Grades are not negotiable. Progress reports are communicated at the end of each 6-week grading period, but the semester grade is cumulative for each semester. No extra credit assignments will be assigned. No exceptions.
