On this day in 1849, scientist Luther Burbank was born. Burbank was a botanist, or someone who studies plant life. He was known for developing new types of flowers and plants. Do you think it’s important that scientist develop new types of plant life? Why or why not?

March 8 is “Working Women’s Day.” Many people feel that being a stay –at-home mom is a full-time job. Do you agree or disagree and why?

On this day in 1454, explorer Amerigo Vespucci was born. The continent we live on is named after Vespucci. What part of the world would you like to sail to and explore? Why did you choose this destination?

In 806 A.D. in China, the first paper money was used. If you could design new paper money for the U.S., what would it look like? What denominations, or amounts, would you create? Be sure to include a sketch of your new paper currency.

Today is “Harriet Tubman Day.” Tubman was abolitionist. This means that she worked to get rid of slavery. She helped many slaves escapes to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Using resources in the classroom, learn five (5) facts about Harriet Tubman and/ or the Underground Railroad and summarize them in your own words,

March 11th is “Johnny Appleseed Day.” John Chapman known as Johnny Appleseed, was responsible for introducing apple tees to many regions of the western frontier. Why do you think apples were valuable to the early settlers? How were they able to use them?

March 12

Today marks the anniversary of the death of Anne Frank who died in 1945. This brave young woman is well known for the diary she kept, capturing her time in hiding from the Nazi soldiers. Do you keep a diary or journal of your own? Do you think it was good for her diary to be published? Why or why not?

March 13th is “Good Samaritan Day.” Make al list of the last ten (10) things you did to help others. You may also want to create a list of (10) additional things you could do to help others.

On this day in 1879, scientist Albert Einstein was born. At an early age, Einstein showed great interest in math and science. How and why is math important to everyday life and jobs?

March 15th is “Absolutely Incredible Kid Day.” Create an award that you would give to yourself for being so incredible. Be sure to explain why you would give yourself this specific award.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. As you probably know, the color green and the shamrock (a three-leaf clover) are symbols associated with this holiday. Create a list of the holidays and the symbols that are known to represent that specific holiday. Are there some holidays that don’t have a symbol? What symbol would you give them?
