Reminder—The Board of Education policies included in the Policy Guide for Parents and Students will be organized into a table of contents and accessible online from the district’s home page by the beginning of next week.

Community Relations

First-Day-of-School Campaign

This week, schools on the traditional calendar will receive seven yard signs—in English and Spanish—announcing the first day of school. Please post them in strategic, high-traffic locations near your school. Please keep track of these yard signs. These will be collected at the end of August and recycled for next year.

Superintendent Jerry Wartgow and Mayor John Hickenlooper will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at West High School to announce the district’s campaign. You’re invited to attend!

Legal Services

Reminder—Schools should comply starting tomorrow with the new state law that requires students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on a daily basis. Please also recognize individual rights to freedom of speech. Specific questions may be forwarded to the legal office at 303-764-3390.

Food and Nutrition Services

Principals of traditional year schools—The attached memo should answer many of your questions regarding meal prices, the schedule for lunchroom employees, etc.

Human Resources

List of Schools and Principals

For your information, attached is the 2003–2004 list of schools and principals in Microsoft Word. Please distribute this information to your staff.

Colorado Teacher License

All administrators and teachers, probationary and non-probationary, must have a current Colorado Teacher License or current authorization to begin school on Monday, Aug. 18. Check the school staffing roster that you received in May from Human Resources during the one-on-one meetings for this information or contact your HR generalist. Let us know if you have questions.

Paraprofessional Job Fair

Attached you will find a Paraprofessional Job Fair announcement. We would like to invite you to participate in the job fair and fill your paraprofessional vacancies. This job fair is for para-professionals reduced from their buildings who have priority in this year’s hiring process. Principal and department head participation is key to having a successful job fair and assisting Human Resources in this hiring process.

The job fair is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Sandoval Montessori School. We truly need and appreciate your help and attendance. We hope to make this job fair and the 2003–2004 school year successful for everyone.

Telephone Reference Guidance Sheet

Attached is a Telephone Reference Check guidance form and directions. (It’s also available on the Web site on the bottom of the “HR Forms” page at , titled Reference Check Form.) The form walks you through questions that must be asked of former employers before you hire a new candidate. Record the responses and submit the completed form to your HR Generalist along with your recommendation to hire. It has only nine questions and takes about 10–15 minutes to complete. Thanks for all you do to ensure we have great educators in our district!

Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Educator Licensing Fees

Please see important information at the link below regarding the new CDE licensure fees.

Also note that the new fees are effective January 1, 2004.

The evaluation fees increase Jan. 1, 2004, to $44 for all licenses and authorizations except the one-year substitute authorization, which will increase to $22. The fee information on the CDE Web site will be updated prior to Jan. 1, 2004, to reflect the new evaluation fees. Visit their Web site at , then click on Educator Licensing.

Curriculum and Instruction

Please check out the new and improved DPS Elementary Literacy Web site at . Some of the important information you will find there includes literacy staff developments for the beginning of the school year; mini-lessons on Living the Writer’s Life for launching Writing Workshop; transcripts for CBLA assessments; and many other support materials for literacy instruction. Since the site is continually being updated and refreshed, visit often (and bookmark it) to get news and access the latest materials.

Public Information Office

Marketing Tip of the Week

When parents and children are greeted warmly and sincerely, the school is immediately seen as friendly place where children are happy. The sooner contact is made between the school and home, the sooner a positive relationship can be established. Within the first few days of school, teachers should send letters home to parents with a list of basic subjects and overall plans for the year; a list of materials the child will need for class; a phone number, email address, and time when the teacher can be reached; and a sincere invitation to share concerns and provide assistance to parents as they help their child with school work.

When talking with parents…don’t forget to thank them for choosing your school!
