Scribe Leadership Card

Job Description: The scribe keeps the troop records. He records the activities of the patrol leaders’ council (PLC)and keeps a record of dues, advancement and Scout attendance at troop meetings.

Leadership Position Coordinator: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

Minimum Rank for this job: Recommended First Class, but not required

Ranks that this job may apply toward: Star, Life, Eagle

Duties of Troop Scribe:

• Lives the Scout Oath and Law.

• Sets a good example.

• Shows Scout Spirit.

• Lead, Train and Inspire

• Enthusiastically wears the Scout uniform correctly.

• Is usually one of the older Scouts in the troop

• Appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and reports to the assistant senior patrol leader.

• A new Scribe is appointed every 6 months.

• Must have attended Youth Leader Training (YLT) before or shortly after election.

• Utilizes skills learned at YLT.

• Must be a visible leader at troop meetings, camp outs and other activities.

• Effectively communicates both verbally and electronically to youth and adults

• Works with the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters and youth leadership to ensure that all Scouts receive the help they need for advancement.

• Serves as a member of the Patrol Leader Conference (PLC).

• Uses TroopTrack to collect attendance at each meeting. If not present at a meeting or outing, prearrange for another scout to gather information for recording later.

• Use TroopTrack to provide reports and minutes of previous PLC meetings to the Patrol Leaders Council on patrol attendance each month. .

• Act as recording secretary for the Patrol Leaders Council meetings, in particular, noting action items and who is responsible for the action. Collects leader reports at the PLC and incorporates them into the PLC minutes.

• Based on discussions, prepare the final Troop meeting plans and distribute to Patrol Leaders via TroopTrack.

• Keep the camping log in TroopTrack up to date and monitor participation by patrols so that the Troop qualifies for the National Camping Award.

• Meets with Scoutmaster regularly to review accuracy of minutes and attendance records.

• Write letters on behalf of the Troop, Thank You letters to all who assist the Troop in anyway, invitations to special guest to Troop events, and to WEBELOS who visit the Troop. Letters should be brought to Troop meetings whenever possible to be approved before mailing and so that the Troop is aware of what correspondence is being mailed out in its name. A file should be maintained of all such correspondence by the Scribe
