WEEKS 3 & 4 - Jesus Christ's example teaches me how to live

Scripture Detective

I dressed up in a trench coat with the detective badge, sunglasses, hat, and with a flashlight and magnify glass in hand. We turned off the lights and I had the pianist play the pink panther song as I came in with the flashlight looking around. Sometimes putting the flashlight in their eyes. Then we turned on the lights and I introduced myself.

“Hello children, my name is Detective Preston and I work for the agency CTR. I hear that you have been learning about Jesus recently. Is this true? Well I was called in for a special assignment to get you future detectives ready to answer some real life questions… but the only one who can answer these questions is Jesus. His life will show us the way. Jesus was a perfect example on how to live our lives. How can we learn more about Jesus? In the scriptures! So when we have questions, we should look in the scriptures and ask ourselves what did Jesus do?”

“I will be asking for many volunteers today. I need you, Jr. Detectives to help me answer these life questions. All of the answers are in the scriptures. There will be several clues that we will be looking for. Each clue will help us answer the question and will also give us a piece to a puzzle which we will have to put together. Are you up for the challenge?”

Now ask for a volunteer and have them pick a question out of the question jar. I put 4 questions into a jar and had them pick 1 out at a time. They are all numbered 1-4, and will coordinate with the clue 1-4. The clues will be a pictures and a scripture on the back that will help them answer the question. I have different questions for Sr. and Jr. just because of their age. You can make up your own questions too if you’d like. After they have picked a question I dressed them up in my detective gear and had them go out with another primary presidency member. They waited until another volunteer hid the clue somewhere in the primary room. When the “detective” comes back into the room, the rest of the primary will help them find the clue by singing louder (if they get closer) and softer if they are not close. (We chose to sing pg. 78 I’m trying to be like Jesus) They had a lot of fun doing this! When they got really close we sang really loud and the “detective” finds the clue and opens up the envelope. Inside is the photo and scripture and a puzzle piece of a heart (attached pdf included of heart).

CLUE #1 Good Samaritan

(PRINT OUT GAK# 218 and paste this scripture and summary on the back. Slip this into a 9x12 envelope with the GAK photo and number it Clue number 1. You can use my graphics if you’d like. For Jr. Primary just summarize the story, but Sr. Primary can read a part of this or all of it when they find the clue. )

A lawyer asked Jesus, "Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 10:25). Jesus asked him what was written in the scriptures, and the lawyer answered, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself" (Luke 10:27; see also Luke 10:26).

Jesus told the lawyer that he would have eternal life if he obeyed this command, but then the lawyer asked, "Who is my neighbor?"

Jesus told about a traveler who was attacked by thieves and left half dead. A priest and then a Levite saw the hurt man, but each of them passed by without helping. Finally, a Samaritan came by and stopped to help the man. He bandaged the man's wounds and carried him on his own animal to an inn. The Samaritan left money with the innkeeper for the man's care. This story shows us what it means to follow the commandment to love our neighbors.

(Explain that Jesus is teaching us that our neighbors are everyone. We should be nice and loving to all people. We shouldn’t pass by someone who is in need just because they are different.)

Have someone add the heart puzzle piece inside the envelope (attached pdf) to the board and start putting the puzzle together.

JR QUESTION #2 You are almost turning eight, and your baptism is coming up. You are very excited about getting baptized but also very nervous. You are nervous because you can’t swim very well and you don’t want to go all the way under water. You are not sure if you can do it. Do you really have to be baptized to be a member of the church?

SR QUESTION #2 Your non-member friend is wondering why you got baptized. His church believes that as long as you believe in Christ you don’t have to get baptized to any church. Is this true?

CLUE #2 Jesus was baptized

(PRINT OUT GAK# 208 and paste this scripture and summary on the back. Slip this into a 9x12 envelope with the GAK photo and number it Clue number 2. You can use my graphics if you’d like. For Jr. Primary just summarize the story, but Sr. Primary can read a part of this or all of the scripture when they find the clue. )

Summary

Jesus came to John the Baptist to be baptized in the Jordan River. John knew that Jesus was without sin, and so he thought Jesus did not need baptism. When Jesus explained that even the Savior must be baptized, John went down into the water and baptized Him. When Jesus came out of the water, John saw the Holy Ghost come to the Savior and heard Heavenly Father's voice bearing witness of His Beloved Son

Mathew 3:13-17

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

(Jr. : Explain that Jesus was baptized in water and so we need to follow his example even if it is scary.

Sr.: Explain that believing in Christ is not enough. Jesus was perfect and the leader of the church and even he got baptized. So we should do the same.)

JR PRIMARY QUESTION #3 During family night your mom teaches that prayer only works if you have faith. What does it mean to have faith? WHAT DID JESUS TEACH US?

SR PRIMARY QUESTION #3 Your dad recently got into a car accident and is in the hospital. Your whole family is fasting for him on Sunday. You are wondering if you should fast too. You are not sure you can go 2 meals without food. It makes your tummy kind of sick when you don’t eat. You are not even sure your prayer is being heard. What would Jesus want you to do?

One night Jesus' disciples put out to sea in a boat while Jesus stayed behind to pray to Heavenly Father. A storm came up and tossed the boat in the waves. When Jesus saw His disciples struggling with their ship in the storm, He started walking on the water toward the ship. The disciples were frightened when they saw a man walking toward them on the water. Then they heard Jesus call to them and tell them not to fear. Peter asked Jesus if he could come to Him, and Jesus told Peter to come. But as Peter did so he became afraid and started to sink.

But when [Peter] saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Matthew 14:30-31

Jesus took hold of Peter's hand and helped him back to the boat. The sea became calm again, and the disciples testified that Jesus was the Son of God.

(Explain that we need to have faith that Jesus is the Christ. Peter doubted and so then he started to sink. We need to continue our faith for us to grow spiritually and not sink.)

Then ask the question again and have a volunteer answer the question. What would Jesus want you to do?

Have someone add the heart puzzle piece inside the envelope (attached pdf) to the board and start putting the puzzle together.

CLUE #4 Serve others

(PRINT OUT GAK# 226 and paste this scripture and summary on the back. Slip this into a 9x12 envelope with the GAK photo and number it Clue number 4. You can use my graphics if you’d like. For Jr. Primary just summarize the story, but Sr. Primary can read a part of this or all of the scripture when they find the clue. )

After eating the Last Supper, Jesus poured water into a basin. He then washed the Apostles' feet and dried them with a towel.

When Jesus finished washing the Apostles' feet, He said, "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" (John 13:14-15).

(Explain that Jesus told us to do unto others as he has done unto us, meaning serve others. Then ask them the question again and have them answer it.)

Have someone add the heart puzzle piece inside the envelope (attached pdf) to the board and start putting the puzzle together.

After all the clues are read you should have an entire heart puzzle completed. It reads Love One Another John 13:34. Bare testimony that Jesus loved us so much he died for us. He wants us to love each other like he loved us.

Bare your testimony of Christ

At the end give out detective badges (attached pdf) with Smarties taped to the back. The badge says “Be a smartie and look for the answers in the scriptures.”

Good luck and have fun!
