Materialism

What is the Biblical position on materialism?

Materialism or fixation on earthly possessions is one mankind’s greatest temptations. Wealth in itself is not condemned in the Scriptures. If fact, it is often considered a gift or blessing. But the Bible warns against the dangers of wealth and gives instruction about its proper use.

A Christian should not live a life as a miser, saving all monies one can, and doing without for the sake of “the love of money”. Life should be full of joy and happiness. A Christian should view wealth and possessions as belonging to God and that are simply stewards of what he allows us to use.

Generosity is a mark of true Christianity, caring more for others than building up wealth. Money can be a useful tool as a blessing for others. A Christian should be looking for opportunities of “blessing” others and sharing a gift from God. Ezekiel 22:29 says we sin if we do not use it to help the poor, the weak, and the oppressed. God expects us to be a blessing to others.

While the world places such importance on wealth and possessions, we should not be anxious of the future. Jesus taught His followers trust their heavenly Father who would provide for them, Matthew 6:25-34). While we live “in this world,” we should endeavor to place our trust and provision in the Lord. If God is blessing you with wealth, that is your gifting to help others. Let us not forget the Great Commission and how He showed, by example, His compassion for others.

Others may be lacking in materialism, and if so, trust and ask God for direction. God never promised every Christian wealth but did state that He will supply all your needs according to His riches in Glory, Philippians 4:19.
