Privacy Tips and Tricks

[Pages:2]Privacy Tips and Tricks

Let's face it, we all do things online that may negatively affect our privacy. From making transactions on unsecure networks, to clicking malicious links. It happens. Here are some tips to help you keep your online privacy secure.

Unsecure WiFi

Search and data tracking

Only connect to HTTPS to avoid hacks If you're surfing on a public WiFi network, make sure the URL of the site you're browsing on starts with HTTPS and not HTTP. Look for the little padlock logo in the web address bar. Hackers have their eyes on HTTP, so steer clear.

Don't share personal info Unsecure WiFi networks are an all-you-can-eat buffet for hungry hackers to monitor your browsing behavior, bank info, credentials and more. To make yourself hackproof, don't share sensitive personal information. Keep account numbers, login credentials and compromising personal stuff, off public WiFi. Period.

Get an alternative Public WiFi is hard to resist, but if you must surf the unsecure, get a personal hotspot to cover you. Just make sure you take precautions and change defaults for added security when you set it up. If you're not hot on hotspots, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) might be right for you. A VPN is much better than a public network, if hackers are lurking.

Read the terms of service before you hit submit Before you start clicking "okay" to a privacy policy, make you sure you put your eyes on it first. You might just be giving an institution the right to track your information without your consent. And nobody wants their information to end up in nefarious hands. Read the service agreements first, before giving up the good stuff.

Use search engines that don't track you The most popular search engines have a financial incentive to track you. Use alternative search engines that won't track you back.

PRIVACY TIPS AND TRICKS

Malicious links

"Disable HTML" or "Read in plain text" Malicious scripts are lurking. Cut them off before they execute as soon as you open an email. If you don't want to disable HTML, then close the preview window. That allows you to delete suspicious emails for your inbox before giving them a chance to go ballistic. Make sure you can see the URL when you hover over a link in an email message This feature is built into most emails by default, but double check to see if it's enabled. Make sure you can see the sender's email address This is one of the main indicators that something might be "phishy." Do not open attachments that you weren't expecting The old tale that only executable attachments can hurt you is funny business. Documents, PDF's and other attachments are just as potentially dangerous. Don't open it if it doesn't look legit. Say that 10 times fast. Stay secure.
