Chapter 6 Vocabulary

1.) King George III: The British Monarch of the colonies.

2.) Quartering Act: A law passed by Parliament in 1765 that required the colonies to house and supply British soldiers.

3.) Revenue: income a government collects to cover expenses.

4.) Sugar Act: A law passed by Parliament in 1764 that placed a tax on sugar, molasses, and other products shipped to the colonies; also called for harsh punishment of smugglers.

5.) Stamp Act: A 1765 law passed by Parliament that required all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing a tax had been paid.

6.) Patrick Henry: A well spoken member of Virginia’s House of Burgesses who called for colonial resistance to the taxes.

7.) Boycott: A refusal to buy certain goods.

8.) Sons of Liberty: A group of colonists who formed a secret society to oppose British policies at the time of the American Revolution.

9.) Crispus Attucks: Son of an African American father and a Native American mother, this young gentleman escaped slavery by taking to life on the sea. He was shot and killed in the Boston Massacre.

10.) Townshend Acts: A series of laws passed by Parliament in 1767 that suspended New York’s assembly and established taxes on goods brought into the British colonies.

11.) Writs of Assistance: A search warrant that allowed British officers to enter colonial homes or businesses to search for smuggled goods.

12.) Samuel Adams: A leader of the Sons of Liberty who called for colonists to continue resisting the British and their efforts to control the colonists.

13.) Boston Massacre: A clash between British soldiers and Boston colonists in 1770, in which five of the colonists, including Crispus Attucks, were killed.

14.) John Adams: The cousin of Samuel Adams, John was a successful lawyer who defended the British soldiers accused of murder during the trial for the Boston Massacre. John Adams proved that 5 of the 7 officers were innocent and 2 were convicted of manslaughter.

15.) Committee of Correspondence: A group of people in the colonies who exchanged letters on colonial affairs.

16.) Boston Tea Party: The dumping of 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor by colonists in 1773 to protest the Tea Act.

17.) Militia: A force of armed civilians pledged to defend their community during the American Revolution; an emerging military force that is not part of the regular army.

18.) Minuteman: A member of the colonial militia who was trained to respond “at a minute’s warning.”

19.) Intolearble Acts: A series of laws enacted by Parliament in 1774 to punish Massachusetts colonist for the Boston Tea Party.

20.) First Continental Congress: A meeting of delegates in 1774 from all the colonies except Georgia to uphold colonial rights.

21.) Paul Revere: A Boston silversmith who answered the call to send the message to the colonists surrounding the city of Boston that the British were indeed coming their way.

22.) Lexington and Concord: Sites in Massachusetts of the first battles of the American Revolution.

23.) Loyalist: An American colonist who supported the British in the American Revolution.

24.) Patriot: An American colonist who sided with the rebels in the American Revolution.
