“We Didn’t Start the Fire” Webquest

Write new ones for assigned years AND explain them

Having sold in excess of 100 million records, Billy Joel is one of the most popular and honored musicians of the last thirty-plus years. Take a look at his catalog and you’ll find you know many of his songs already. In 1989 he wrote a popular song entitled “We Didn’t Start the Fire” that captures the people, places, events, and things from 1949-1989. Over the next few days not only will you learn about these song’s elements, but you also will be filling in the lyrical gap he left from 1996-2014.

GRADING:

STEP 1: You will be given a sheet with the highlighted verse to research and a corresponding year to complete song.

STEP 2: Read your Billy Joel verse that you are to explain AND the year since for which you’ll be writing original lyrics.

STEP 3: We’ll be in the library/computer lab for you to complete research on the years selected for this webquest.

STEP 4: Your first step is to go to , then click on “more…” and then click on “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and begin to read your task for this research webquest. I would like you to begin your search using the Gale Biography Database.

STEP 5: After researching your Billy Joel time period, you need to ADD new lyrics for the ONE year that you were given to add to the song. Include important people, places, events, and things from your time period and organize them to fit into the song. Get a sense of how Joel sings the song so that you can replicate his pauses, emphasis, and so on. You will find a pacing chart to help you with putting your lyrics together on the webquest page. At the bottom of this webquest you will find links for you to find people, events, & places by years.

STEP 6: Putting together your research

• You will be designing scrapbook pages(Joel’s verse) and an infographic (new verse)

• Your presentation will be a mini sharing session in which you will present your new verse for the song

• Your presentation of research should include a pictures and facts on your topics

• You will need to complete a work cited page

• You will design a new verse for the song

A. Billy Joel’s verse REQUIREMENTS (Scrapbook):

• You will need to complete a scrapbook using your research on the years you have for the Billy Joel’s verse you need at least five (5) facts for each topic. Your scrapbook will consist of a title page with the year(s) that you researched and your name and group. Each page of your scrapbook will need to have two of the topics, at least 5 facts for each topic and illustrations/photos for each topic. Your scrapbook should be at the most 5 pages

B. New verse REQUIREMENTS (infographic):

• You will need to complete an infographic using your research on the year you have for the new verse; you need at least five (5) facts for each topic plus a photo.

• You will take the important people, events, and places from your updated time period and organize them to fit into the song.  At the top of this webquest is a syllable chart of Billy Joel's verses. That way you can replicate his verses with your updated information.  

• Once you have designed your verse submit it through “Google docs” or into the basket 

C. ORAL PRESENTATION 

• After creating your infographic, you will present it to the class, explaining each of your topics. Presentation will need to be at least 5 minutes in length. 

E. WORKS CITED PAGE (Of Course) 

• You will need to have at least 8 sources for this project from both the Billy Joel’s verse and the new verse!

• You will be required to do a works cited page in some form, either typed, handwritten in pen or included in your presentation in some way.
