VISITORS AND GUESTS

Guests for breakfast were Troy deJong – Price’s Alarms, Jennifer VanderSchaaf and James Williams and from Nanaimo Daybreak, Bob Wall.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

Today, Steve & Shawna celebrate their anniversary.

HEALTH OF OUR CLUB

Ouch!!! At our club BBQ, the corn cooker left Jim Tucker with a serious burn on his leg.

CLUB PRESIDENT – BARRY SPARKES

Barry extended a warm Rotary welcome and his congratulations to everyone for our great rendition of O’Canada. It’s official – we are pleased to have James Williams as the newest member on our Club Roster.

Barry knew – on August 8th, 1814 peace negotiations between the US and UK began in neutral Belgium; in 1898 Kellog’s introduced corn flakes; 1960 we first heard the lyrics ‘Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’.

FOUNDATION

$ 110 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Barry Sparkes was the lucky holder of the draw for $ 16.

Please note, all contributions will go the Annual Fund unless you direct Barry otherwise.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – DOUG SLOWSKI

Many happy dollars for the lovely summer day. Sad buck from Sheila. Perhaps not her fault. The scribe made last minute changes to the Club Duty Roster. Sad buck from James for lives lost due to mental illness not being detected. Soon, Rachel is off to Armstrong for a kettle bell meet. This week-end Harry is demonstrating his blacksmith skills at the Coombs Fair. Lee looking forward to a family wedding followed by holiday time relaxing at home. Neil is very happy to have house renovations complete. Michael is off to Seattle to the Rolling Stones concert. Sad dollar from Don T. While driving through Manning Park, a near tragedy when a deer broadsided a motorcyclist. Very scary! From Greg, a happy dollar for his one year ago introduction to Rotary by Randy. Lucky ticket winner was Bob Wall. Not so lucky, he did not draw the joker. Next week, $ 320 in the pot.

ROTARY MINUTE – RACHEL ROBERTSON

In the Rotary calendar, February is designated as World Understanding Month. The month also includes the anniversary of the founding of Rotary International on February 23rd, 1905, now designated World Understanding and Peace Day. Rotary clubs are asked to plan programs and undertake special activities to emphasize understanding and goodwill as essential for world peace. World Understanding Month is a chance for Clubs and Rotarians to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Avenue of Service – Rotary’s continued quest for goodwill, understanding and peace among people of the world. Thank-you Rachel for your thoughtful research!

JENNIFER VANDERSCHAAF

As executive director, Nanaimo Conservatory of Music (NCM), Jennifer gave us an interesting presentation. We were delighted to learn about this amazing musical organization. Jennifer grew up in a music world and she has a rich musical background.

NCM is a non-profit, charitable community music school. Over the past 43 years, they have brought music education to children and adults in central Vancouver Island. The School offers a multitude of diverse private and group lessons and many special classes and programs such as Kindermusik, Suzuki method clinics, music therapy and festivals.

All the School programmes are user-pay based. This means they can only offer lessons if the students pay up front. Currently users number 200+ and range in age from preschoolers to senior citizens. The NCM has room to handle more students, however the issue for many parents is fees. This year, through donations and fundraising, NCM is able to subsidize three students. The School is currently working on a plan to bring music back into public schools. “Learning to play an instrument has been proven to produce brain-building compounds and neural growth factors that make children smarter. It is known that playing musical instruments increases comprehension and math skills, enables better coordination and increases memory capacity.”

CLUB BUSINESS

Club policies and procedures with suggested revisions have been circulated and will be discussed at our next week meeting.

Club committees with 2019-2020 members will be circulated. Everyone is welcome to pitch in whenever, wherever they want to help.

Mark is looking for member input for our Mine Town Day booth on September 7th.

NEW DISTRICT 5020 PUBLICATION

“Being part of something new is always exciting. You get that “cutting edge” feeling. It must have felt that way when the first automobile hit the roads; the first astronaut rocketed into space; the first person to get more than 100 friends on Facebook. Time passes quickly, so when we have a chance to be first, we have to move quickly before it is gone.

That is the feeling I have about the new District Magazine. It’s an exciting format and an excellent opportunity to offer your stories for the entire district to read. Hat’s off to Caleb Summerfelt for creating this cutting edge opportunity.” As written by DG Mo Maureen Fritz-Roberts.

I highly recommend reading this new publication. It is all about ‘highlighting inspirational news and successes to UNITE Rotarians with a common mission within District 5020. UD5020 will be printed monthly. Member contributions are welcome. The link is
