5. Curriculum Mapping

a. What have the students been expected to learn during their past school years?

The students have been expected to analyze important geographic, political, economic, and social aspects of life in the region prior to the Revolutionary period. They have been educated on the history of North Carolina, as well as the first half of American history beginning with Columbus in 1492 until the Civil War Era. They also had a civics and economics course in the tenth grade.

b. What are the students to learn in the present school year?

The students are to have taken the first half of American history learning of the early period of Columbus in 1492 until the Civil War Era. This course begins towards the end of the American civil War and Reconstruction. Students will learn about foreign relations, as well as the Impact of Wars on the US, and the impact of the US on the world. Domestic affairs will also be covered in this course.

c. What are they going to be expected to learn in future grades?

As of now, United States History is the last history required for high school students; however, they can opt to further educate themselves on history in AP classes. AP classes are college level courses that go into much greater detail of the subject matter and have extra requirements not found in an on-level or honors class.

Five resources to supplement the textbook:

1. . This is the website that the textbook offers in order to aid in teaching and understanding the material.

2. This site offers primary source documents that, as a teacher, I could pull and present to my class.

3. This is a great resource as a teacher. It offers activities, suggestions, current events, and other tools that the teacher can use to present information.

4. This site offers help in teaching American history. It offers lesson plans and opportunities to collaborate with other teachers.

5. This site provides access to the most important documents in US History.

Standards not covered:

The only essential not covered directly related to the chapters in this textbook is AH2.H.1. This standard is a general overview of the course so it is incorporated within the course; however, not directly addressed. All other essential standards were used in my curriculum plan.
