Welcome to Miss Mitchell’s Second Grade Class

Welcome to Mrs. Rowekamp’s Third Grade Class!

September 2011 Newsletter

This is the first of many newsletters to come to update and inform you on what is happening in our classroom and school. Please read this information packet carefully and feel free to respond with any questions or concerns you may have.

SNACK- I encourage children to bring a small, healthy snack to school each day. Please do not send anything that requires refrigeration or needs to be eaten with utensils. We recently had a child diagnosed with peanut allergies! Please do not send any snacks with peanuts or peanut butter.

LUNCHES/LUNCH MONEY/TICKETS-

Lunches should be brought to school in bags or lunch boxes. Please mark them with your child’s name. Money should be sent in a closed container or envelope marked with your child’s name.

HOMEWORK- Homework will be given Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Homework should be returned to school the very next day, unless otherwise stated. Your child will use a homework planner to record their daily homework assignments. PLEASE initial the planner EVERY NIGHT on the corresponding date. Your child will put their homework and important papers into their Take Home Folder. The children will usually have the following things to do Monday through Thursday:

1. Reading Calendar- Your child is to read at least 15 minutes each night either independently, with a friend/sibling, or with an adult. A Reading Log will be sent home with your child in their green folder. Please have your child write the pertinent information on it and have you initial it after they read each night. These will be collected at the end of each month.

2. Spelling-Your child will bring home a list of spelling words every Monday. Your child is to complete a spelling activity each night from their Spelling Packet. The packets are due on Friday completed. The students should study the words independently or with a parent/sibling each night. We will have a pretest on Monday in order to construct our individualized spelling lists, and the formal spelling tests will be given on Fridays. Spelling will start the week of September 19th.

4. Math- Every night your child will have math homework. This might include a Home Link, a Mathbox, or a practice set. Home Links are an important part of the Everyday Math Program, and parent participation is sometimes required to complete the sheet. A parent letter will be sent home at the beginning of each unit. Please take the time to read this letter and store it away. It does contain the answers for the homework if you would like to check your child’s work.

Homework is an important tool to teach children responsibility, as well as to review important concepts learned during the school day. It is crucial that you set up a homework routine with your child. Set a time and place to do homework with your child. Feel free to offer encouragement and help to your child. The help should be minimal. I do not expect you to sit for hours working on it, or for it to become a punishment for the parent if the student will not cooperate. If there is a major problem getting homework finished, please return it to school along with a brief note. Your child and I will do it together in school the next day. If your child does not turn in an assignment, they will have to fill out a Missing Homework Assignment Sheet and it will be sent home for you to sign. It is expected that the assignment will be turned in the next day.

BOOK CLUBS- Each month you will have the opportunity to purchase books from various book clubs. Each book purchased earns points for our class to get free books. It is exciting to get books in school. It also helps to build a love of reading. Look on the back of the order form to see the date orders must be returned to school. Please pay for your order by check and make the check out to the book club.

I will also send directions on how to order online with the first book order.

BIRTHDAYS- On your child’s birthday we will sing to them and they will get a pencil and sixty cents to buy ice cream in the cafeteria. If you would like to send in a treat for your child to share with his/her classmates, please feel free to do so. You may drop off the treat in the morning. If you would like to join us, we will usually celebrate in the afternoon around 3:00.

SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, AND PHYSICAL THERAPY- These will be scheduled, for those students who qualify, as soon as possible. I will let you know your child’s schedule as soon as it is in place.

BACKPACKS- Children should bring a backpack each day with their agenda, materials, and Take Home Folder inside. Please send any notes to school in the front pocket of the Take Home Folder. Children will bring home completed work, notes, homework, and notices in this folder. Be sure to check it daily.

RECESS- We have recess/ free time on most days. On dry days we will have recess outside. Please have your child dress for the weather so they may go outside.

LIBRARY- Students are free to choose two books from the school library to take home whenever they wish. They must return the old books before borrowing new ones.

SPECIALS- The children have a specials schedule tucked in the outside of their green take home folders.
