Substances

Recall that matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything around us is matter, including things that we cannot see--like the salt in a pail of ocean water. Matter is either a pure substance or a mixture of substances. A pure substance, or simply a substance, is a type of matter with a fixed composition. A substance can be an element or a compound. Some substances you might recognize are helium, aluminum, water, and salt.
