The DesktopThe desktop is made up of five sections.Fig 1.1 Desktop Icons Fig 1.2 Start Button Fig 1.3 The Taskbar (Left Side: Icons for the Regular Tasks - This replaces the old Quick Launch Toolbar) Fig 1.4 The Taskbar (Middle: Icons for the Temporary Tasks) Fig 1.5 Notification AreaThe Desktop DisplayRight clicking on the desktop will bring up the “Personalize” option.This menu can also be reached through the Control Panel.Personalizing your desktop means changing it to look and act the way you want it to.Window Color and Appearance:Here you can change the color of your windows, start menu and taskbar.Desktop Background:Here you can change your desktop wallpaper by adding a new image. You can also change how that image is displayed. You can “fit it to screen”, “tile” it or “center” it.Screen Saver:Here you can change what image or animation you will use for your screensaver. A screensaver comes on when your computer is “left idle”. You can also choose how long to wait before starting the screen saver. Computers don’t need a screensaver but before they did. If you left your computer on displaying an image for too long, that image would burn onto your screen. This meant you would see it every time you used the computer. A screensaver made sure the images on your computer were changing regularly.Sounds:Change the sounds you hear from your computer. Your computer uses certain sounds to do different things like empty the recycle bin. Here you can change what sounds the computer uses.Mouse pointers:Your mouse pointer or cursor looks a certain way when it is doing certain jobs. You can change how your mouse pointer looks hereThemes:Changing your theme will change many different things like sounds, mouse pointers, backgrounds and screensavers, giving them one new look throughout.Display Settings:Here you can change the resolution of your monitor. People might want to use this feature if they are playing computer games or watching movies. You can also mirror your monitor on to another display like a TV or projector screen.Desktop icons/shortcuts:By right clicking you can sort out a messy desktop by sorting your icons or shortcuts. To do this choose “Sort By” and select either Name, Size, Type or Last ModifiedThe Control Panel:The Control Panel allows you to change basic settings on your computer. You can use the Control Panel to add new hardware (ex: printer) or remove software (a program you no longer use), control user accounts and control the security of your computer. There are many options. Lets try a few.Remove a programWhen wish to remove a program from our computer we open the Control Panel and select “Programs – Uninstall a program”. Select the program you want to remove and then click on the option “Uninstall/change”. Wait until the program removal is finished before doing anything else.User accounts:Standard vs. Administrator AccountsBefore you start making new user accounts, it's important to understand the two types of accounts:Standard:?Standard accounts are the basic accounts you use for normal, everyday tasks. As a Standard user, you can do just about anything you would need to do, such as running software or personalizing your desktop. Also, Parental Controls can be placed on Standard accounts.Administrator:?Administrator accounts are special accounts used for making certain changes to system settings or managing other people's accounts. They have full access to every setting on the computer. Every computer will have at least one Administrator account.Getting to your user accounts:Go to your Control Panel in the Start MenuClick Add or Remover User Accountsz This is the?Manage Accounts?pane. You will see all of the user accounts here, and you can add more accounts or manage existing ones.The Manage Accounts paneTo create a new account:From the?Manage Accounts?pane, click?Create a new account.Type an?account name.Creating an accountSelect?Standard user?or?Administrator.Click?Create Account.Changing an Account's SettingsOnce you've created a new account, you may want to add a?password?or make other changes to the account's settings.Creating a PasswordFrom the?Manage Accounts?pane, click the account name or picture. Click?Create a password.Create a passwordType a password in the?New password?field and retype it in the?Confirm new password?field.Type a password and hintIf you want, you can type a password hint to help you remember your password.Click?Create password.To go back to the Manage Accounts pane, click?Manage another account.Account passwords are?case sensitive, which means that capital and lowercase letters are treated as different characters. For example,?aBc1?is not the same as?abc1.Changing Your Account PictureYou can also?change the picture?for any account. This picture appears next to the account name and helps you easily identify the account.From the?Manage Accounts?pane, click the account name or picture.Click?Change the picture.Change the pictureSelect a picture, or click?Browse for more pictures?to select one of your own.Click?Change Picture. ................
