An introduction...by Mrs. Gina CanuelSpeech Teacher,Speech Therapist,orSpeech-LanguagePathologist? It doesn’t matter what we are called, our credentials and training are fairly similiar. An SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) has completed a master's degree in the field of study. This is the bare minimum educational requirement to be an SLP. You may find a designation of SLP-A (an assistant), which is someone who might work under the supervision of an SLP. Some SLP’s have completed an Educational Specialist Program, and have the designation of Ed.S., after their name (that’s my latest degree at 52 years old?), and some go for their doctorate! I consider myself pretty blessed to achieve this goal. I hold a Teaching Certificate from the State of Georgia, a License as and SLP in the State of Georgia, and a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. I have been a private practice clinician, a contractor, owned a SLP business, and have managed or supervised others in my 33 years of service to the communication-disordered population. I have loved every setting I have been with young and old, sick and healthy, they have all been a joy! My clinical practice ranges from adults with head injury, swallowing problems and Parkinson’s Disease to Childhood Apraxia, Autism, and Language Processing deficits. I have no favorite. This is simply because each child or patient comes with their own set of strengths and weaknesses, and it is always an incredible challenge to meet their individual needs. It’s what we do.Personally, I am married to Roger, he’s a Pastor and one super nice and tolerant guy! Here he is...I’m doing a good job bugging him!Here are my dogs…Skippy and Tacolina I also have 4 children and 2 grands...Here are the tiniest and cutest!Carina and Chloe And finally, here’s me on a big 80’s-style hair day!I look forward working with each of you to make this world a better place!
