Five Paragraph Essay Editing Checklist

When your essay’s rough draft is finished, complete the following tasks in order using this checklist:

Exchange rough copies with a classmate who has also finished his/her essay. Make sure you also exchange these Essay Editing Checklists.

Read through his/her essay CAREFULLY, recording your recommendations for improvement on the rough copy itself. Make sure you note the essay’s strengths; weaknesses; suggestions for improvement; spelling, grammar and punctuation errors; etc.

When finished editing the essay itself, complete this checklist by using checks (() or “Xs” (() in the column on the left depending on whether or not the student has completed each component.

When you receive your own essay back, use your editor’s suggestions to help you improve your own essay and make it better. You may also benefit from this editing process by incorporating some of the stylistic strengths you found in your peer’s essay into your own writing.

When finished making improvements, edit your own essay and complete this checklist yourself by using checks (() or “Xs” (() in the column on the right depending on whether or not you have completed each component.

Once completed, hand this Essay Editing Checklist in with your good copy.
