Jesus Teaches About Respect

Luke 6:27-36

TRUE LOVE Luke 6:27-36 is a continuation of Jesus' Sermon on the Plain. Here Jesus teaches what it really means to love and respect others. In fact, this is where the timeless maxim "Do to others as you would like them to do to you" originated. Most of us relate this statement to the interactions of our daily lives: If someone is a nickel short at the cash register, pitch in. If someone is in a hurry, o er your place in line.

But verse 31 implies even more than that. You see, Jesus understood the Jews' struggles under Roman oppression. The Jewish people knew what enemies were, and when Jesus talked about people who cursed them, mistreated them, struck them, and stole from them, the Jews likely thought of the Romans. It would've been tough for the Jewish people to accept the idea that they should love their oppressors and treat them as they would like to be treated.

ACT OF WILL Jesus wasn't saying that they should have warm feelings toward their enemies. Instead, Jesus was telling them to love their enemies as a conscious act of will, to act in ways that would please their enemies, to behave toward them as a merciful God would. Jesus' command runs exactly counter to the human impulse. Even so, this is the law of love that God wants to see in the hearts of those who follow Jesus.

HEAVENLY REWARD Jesus also points out the emptiness of loving only those who love us. That's easy! Our love isn't based on the expectation of being loved in return; instead we can look forward to a heavenly reward because we have treated people as God wants us to treat them.

BE AN EXAMPLE In his summary at the end of this teaching, Jesus stresses the importance of the principle he has explained. If we are "children of the Most High," we will live and love in the way Jesus describes. When people watch us, they can see our merciful God in our attitudes and actions.

LIVING INSIDE OUT

It's easy to love, respect, and forgive our friends. But it's much more di cult to show the same good will toward those who mistreat us. Of all people, Jesus knew that the most. He lived a sinless life, full of love for even the most outcast and sinful. Falsely accused, mocked and beaten, and about to die on the cross, Jesus cried out for forgiveness for his enemies. What an example!

When is it hard for you to love and show respect to others? Is there someone you need to forgive or show more respect? Pray that God will give you the strength to make a conscious choice to change your thinking and actions. Model to your kids the kind of love Jesus wants us to show.

INTRODUCE Tell a two-minute story about a time you were a child and you had your feelings hurt. Say: Even though my feelings were hurt, Jesus teaches that hurting people back isn't right. We still need to love and respect others. Each time I list an instruction that Jesus gave, respond by shouting: "Respect everyone!" Ready?

EXPLAIN Say: Part of respecting others is being careful about their feelings. Our words or our actions might hurt someone else. In fact, we have some visitors today who are very sensitive. We'll have to be careful not to hurt their feelings!

EXPERIENCE Hand out the bubble solution and bubble wands to the small-group leaders, and instruct your leaders to blow bubbles over the heads of the kids. Say: Here they are now! Our visitors are little, fragile bubbles! Try to catch as many bubbles as you can, and hold them gently in your hands. Allow two minutes.

Leader Tip

Prepare Ahead Try making your own bubble solution with this easy recipe:

t1 cup dishwashing detergent (Joy works well)

t8 cups water

t1/4 cup light corn syrup

Mix enough to ll a container the size of a baby food jar for each group. Form wands to dip inside the jars with chenille wire bent into a circle.

If time, do bubble popping prayer of thanks. Teacher blows the

bubbles and the kids pop the bubbles with their hands. Each

time the child pops a bubble, they must say something they are

thankful for.
