Roy Griffin Hall Jr. ('51 BA, '55 JD), 91, of Pfafftown; March 27, 2018. Hall practiced law in Winston-Salem as a defense attorney. Earlier, he was assistant director of UNC's Institute of Government and taught law classes at UNC. He was in the Army in WWII and in the Navy after law school. At UNC, he belonged to Law Review and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Richard Vollers Hanson ('51), 88, of Wilmington; Feb. 3, 2018. Hanson owned Spirittine Chemical. He was in the Army in the Korean War and the National Guard. At UNC, he belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. Rufus Sylvester Swain ('51 BSMAT, '53 MEd), 91, of Wilson; Feb. 19, 2018. A dean of instruction and of resource development at Wilson Community College, Swain wrote A History of Wilson Technical Community College: The First 30 Years. A gardener and photographer, he founded the Wilson Rose Garden, and his photographs were exhibited in 11 cities, including the Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. In WWII, he was in the Navy. Dr. William Gentry Thurman ('51 CMED), 89, of Anacortes, Wash.; Feb. 10, 2018. For 18 years, Thurman was president of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Previously, he taught pediatrics at Tulane, Emory and Cornell universities and was the first chair of pediatrics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center before becoming dean of the Medical School at Tulane University. He was in the Army. At UNC, he belonged to the football and track teams. Nancy Norwood Willard ('51), 88, of Raleigh; March 23, 2018. Willard retired from sales at Talbot's. At UNC, she belonged to Chi Omega.

'52 obituaries Aubrey Wilbur "Obby" Bronstein ('52), 87, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; Feb. 14, 2018. Bronstein owned and operated Dave The Clothier (later known as Dave's Big and Tall) in downtown Kinston and was past president of the Downtown Merchants Association. He was in the Air Force in the Korean War. At UNC, he belonged to Tau Epsilon Phi. Paul Stanley "Pete" Davis ('52 BSBA), 90, of Morganton; March 4, 2018. Davis worked for Procter & Gamble for 39 years, retiring as systems manager. He was an Army veteran. Robert Starnes Dent ('52 ABEd), 89, of Winston-Salem; March 12, 2018. Dent worked in his family's business in Florida until retirement. Harry Leigh Derby III ('52 BA), 87, of Charlotte; Feb. 13, 2018. Derby made his career at Exxon, starting as a mailroom clerk and retiring as regional manager. At UNC, he belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha, student government and the football and lacrosse teams. James Alan Duke ('52 BA, '55 MA, '60 PhD), 88, of Fulton, Md.; Dec. 10, 2017. A world-renowned ethnobotanist, Duke had a 32year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was a distinguished herbal lecturer with the Maryland University of Integrative Health. In 1998, he established Green Farmacy Garden, which includes 300 medicinal plant species from around the world. In 2001, he received UNC's Distinguished Alumnus Award. At UNC, he belonged to Phi Eta Sigma and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Presley Zachary "P.Z." Dunn Jr. ('52 BSMED,

'15 updates Samuel Emerson Poole ('15 BSBA) of Charlotte has been named an associate at Ridgemont Equity Partners, where he will be involved with the middle-market private equity firm's investor relations. Aleksander H. "Sasha" Seymore ('15 BA) of Atlanta has been selected as an inaugural Knight-Hennessy Scholar, which fully funds graduate-level work in any field at Stanford University. After graduation, Seymore, currently a business analyst at McKinsey, received a Mitchell Scholarship, which he used to study the possibility of peace through sports at the University of Queens in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He also played basketball for Ireland's professional team, the Belfast Star. Seymore will use the Knight-Hennessy to pursue an MBA in the fall. He is a past member of the GAA Board of Directors as senior class president (2014?15). Alyssa Victoria Townsend ('15 BAJMC) of Pensacola, Fla., has been recognized as a member of the 2018 Rising Stars Class by the Independent News of Pensacola. Townsend is director of social media for Bee Loud Digital Marketing, the in-house marketing agency for Innisfree Hotels.

24, of Mooresville; March 14, 2018. Smith worked in the Language Acquisition Lab in the psychology department at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. At UNC, he was a communication intern in the Southern Oral History program and managed offices and labs in the communications and linguistics department.

'16 updates Cierra Brooke "C.B." Cotton ('16 BAMJ) of Jacksonville has been honored by NorthEast Community Development at the 2018 Intriguing African American Women Gala. Cotton, the Jacksonville bureau chief for WITN, the NBC affiliate in eastern North Carolina, was recognized for telling the stories of her home community. Andrew Luther Goins IV ('16 BAMJ) of Washington, D.C., has been named a digital producer for the Opinions section at The Washington Post. Goins had been editing part time for the section's multiplatform desk.
