MemorandumTo: University of Utah Research and Pharmaceutical Departments From: Alexis Gough – Senior Buyer Date:June 5, 2015Subject: Continuous monitoring alarm device for RevcoOn October 20, 2010, Lorris Betz, David Pershing, Tom Parks, and Arnold Combe sent an email to all Deans, Directors, and Department Heads regarding the millions of dollars of loss of some very valuable research materials and to discuss measures to prevent similar losses of materials stored in refrigerators and freezers. The State of Utah’s insurance carrier imposed specific loss prevention requirements. Insurance coverage will be excluded or restricted unless these requirements are met. The insurer now requires that all cooling units containing research or pharmaceutical materials be equipped with continuous monitoring alarm devices/systems with autodial email, call, or texting capabilities which notify key personnel in case of power outage, equipment failure, or critical temperature change. These are remote alarms that will call/email/or text a number of phone numbers in an attempt to notify personnel of problems on weekends, holidays, etc.Purchasing has been tasked with communicating with campus departments when orders for new freezers and refrigerators are placed to make sure they know to protect their valuable research samples etc stored in this equipment. If monitoring alarm devices are not installed, any losses will not be covered by University insurance. Insurance will also not apply, unless you provide an updated inventory of materials stored in your cooling unit. Inventory lists will be collected annually by the University of Utah Risk & Insurance Management department. Please contact me in Purchasing at 801-585-1959 with any questions. I have attached the business information of Jim Page who can provide quotes for a monitoring alarm device and installation if you so choose. In addition, Jim can also provide a maintenance agreement to make certain auto dialers are properly functioning.Automated Specialty Lab Repair, Attn: Jim Page, Phone: 801-807-8644 or 801-585-9500Thank you,Alexis GoughSenior Buyer ................
