Job Description – Director of OperationsJob TitleDirector of OperationsSalary RangeCompetitiveDepartmentData CollectionLocationBrentwood, Essex and/or London (most of the Directorate’s staff are in Brentwood and, typically, you will be expected to spend a minimum of two days a week each week in Brentwood)Reporting toGuy Goodwin (Chief Executive)Summary of RoleThe Director of Operations will be a member of NatCen’s Leadership Team and Head of our Brentwood Site.The successful candidate will have strategic oversight across our operations - data collection, IT/systems and delivery & change functions. Their remit is to lead and provide high quality and effective operations that deliver what customers require, including to:deliver on customer projects and hold and then improve our response rates;better integrate our operations and deliver process and technological efficiencies;enable change including mixed mode data collection and new delivery mechanisms;plan for future structures and operations, as the market changes further.Specific Duties & Responsibilities:The Director will report directly to the Chief Executive, Guy Goodwin, and will manage the further three key leadership roles in the Directorate:The Director of Data Collection is the key specialist adviser on data collection (including mixed mode). Their remit is to: Lead our field, nurse and telephone data collection operations including the relevant support staff and our interviewers.Deliver the field and telephone data collection requirements to time and quality, including delivering on field and telephone response rates.The Director of IT plans and runs every day IT operations but also has responsibility for:A pro-active foresight role re: technology, both organisationally and for the operations area (for example, web data collection).Integrating existing computing teams/functions, including survey computing and development work.Extending our expertise in our data collection systems and supporting more closely the operational side of the business.The Director of Delivery & Change oversees the operations staff that are front-facing to our research teams and has responsibility for:Delivery of the individual surveys and projects on the operational side (but also corporate projects).Oversight and delivery of our web and postal services, including our warehousing. Data processing and management.Driving out operational and process efficiencies.A pro-active foresight role re: operations and oversight and responsibility for delivery of change.Overarching responsibility on information security and quality assurance.Ultimately, the Director of Operation’s success will be judged by the extent to which she/he constantly delivers data collection operations to time, quality, response rate and cost targets in a highly commercial environment. Key relationships include: Gillian Prior, Director, Surveys, Data and Analysis, and Nancy Kelley, Director, Policy Research Centre: the key Directors and internal customers for Operations. Gillian and Nancy’s Directorates hold most of our social researchers and front-face towards the external customers.Requirements of the Role:Essential:We are open to candidates from a range of different sectors and backgrounds, providing you can demonstrate: Leadership skills and experience at a senior level, demonstrating the ability to build an effective leadership team around you and set direction for a large business area of over 700 office based and remote workers.An infectious enthusiasm and proactivity, including considerable determination to drive through culture change.A sharp focus and proven record of operational delivery - at home with being accountable for and delivering quantitative cost and outcome targets.Experience of change management programmes and a record of delivery of change, both in processes and technology.
