FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“A Day of Health and Wellness for Seniors at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, May 30”

WHITE PLAINS, NY – May 8, 2012 -- Engaging in physical activity has been found to bring numerous benefits to people as they advance in age. Recent reports have shown that physical activity helps lower the risk for dementia and heart disease, as well as decrease the chance of developing type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults by 60 percent.

The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital recognizes the need to educate older adults about the benefits of exercise and healthy living, and will be hosting a Senior Health and Fitness Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 30 at Burke’s campus, 785 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. The day’s events will include fitness classes such as Pilates, Chair Zumba, stretching and walking that will be taught by Fitness Center at Burke instructors. There will also be seminars on reading food labels, healthy aging, proper sugar intake and fall prevention.

“There are so many benefits that come from proper nutrition and exercise, especially for the older adult,” said Heather Massimo, director of the Fitness Center at Burke. “We want to encourage people to get moving and stay active.”

Senior Health and Fitness Day is free and open to the public, with lunch included. Due to space limitations, registration is required. Please call Heather Massimo at (914) 597-2578 to register and for information. The event is sponsored by the Fitness Center at Burke, White Plains Hospital’s Division of Geriatric Services, White Plains Recreation & Parks Community Center, Westchester County Department of Senior Programs & Services, Willow Towers Assisted Living, and Greenwich Woods Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.
