The DAI team at Southampton aims to ensure the University has the data, information and analysis it needs to inform and drive evidence based decision making and to inform, test and measure progress of the University 10 year plan.The post holder will be a highly analytic, strategic thinker who is confident in working with and drawing together multiple data and information to make clearly articulated and presented strategic recommendations for use by senior stakeholders. They will be required to work flexibly across data sources and deliverables including those related to the student lifecycle. They will provide performance reporting, data analysis, modelling and interpretation/insight to support the University in delivering on its strategy and business plans including those specific to areas such as Recruitment, Education, Widening Participation and International. The post holder will work with a wide range of staff within the team as well as with other professional services/academic departments across the University.The post-holder’s key areas of responsibility include:To undertake sophisticated quantitative data manipulation, analysis and modelling on both internal and external datasets related to student applications, admission and enrolment cycles; student progress, success and outcomes, alongside other University and sector datasets as appropriate. These activities are carried out in order to:Inform, test and monitor University StrategiesInform and monitor the institutional response to external accountability measures such as performance indicators, Teaching Excellence Framework, Access & Participation Plan, and league tables.Support the University management in evidence-based decision making through performance reporting, data analysis and insightInform and monitor the University’s financial and business planning activities?Respond to requests from both internal and external stakeholders for information and analysis related to the student lifecycle and other University and sector datasetsTo present analysis and recommendations resulting from the activities above to a variety of audiences ranging from the University executive, senior decision makers, heads of professional services alongside a large number of users in faculty and Professional Services. Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities% Time1.To contribute to strategic evidence based decision making in the University through detailed manipulation, analysis and reporting of various data.This could include but not limited to:To develop, maintain and publish a diverse range of relevant and timely analyses, performance reports and dashboards for use by University managers in decision making processes, utilising both internal and external data sources as appropriate. Ensuring outputs are appropriate to the target audience.To undertake modelling and forecasting to support planning and decision making.To provide analysis and insight into the size and shape of the applicant and student population, the profile of enrolled students, and their academic outcomesTo provide analysis and reporting that, using sector data, allows the university to benchmark itself to competitors and the sector across a range of measures.To undertake analysis and develop recommendations around the university’s performance in external measures such as league tables and TEF, in support of decisions and action plans.To produce, as appropriate: committee papers/reports, bespoke analysis and automated reporting/modelling tools aimed at decision makers50 %2.To respond to requests for data and information from a wide variety of colleagues across the University and from external organisations, with excellent levels of customer service and pro-activity, ensuring any statutory response times are met (for example in the case of requests under the Freedom of Information Act).20 %3.To provide expert support and guidance to colleagues responsible for the maintenance of student data to ensure that data quality is maximised, including supporting the verification of data to be submitted externally.10%4.To line manage direct reports, exercising good people management practices including mentoring, coaching, training, advice and guidance as necessary. Ensure the right mix of skills and capabilities through continuous professional development, recruitment and performance feedback.10%5.To attend internal and external committees, project and working knowledge and experienceSkill level equivalent to achievement of HND, Degree, NVQ4 with a strong statistical /data analysis /market research content or equivalent professional qualifications and experience.A high level of numeracy coupled with a proven ability to accurately analyse and interpret complex datasets from multiple electronic sources, synthesising information from various sources to form a comprehensive and concise picture.Proven experience of undertaking thorough and detailed analysis and of using those findings to develop recommendations, presenting outcomes in a clear and
