Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I HAVE A DREAM! – I remember the 60’s. There was some great music, the arrival of the Beatles, Hemisfair 68, the moon landing in ’69. However, it was also a very tumultuous time. I remember special reports on riots and student marches. The country was birthing cultural change, and the labor pains were many. In the midst of the turmoil was a voice that cried out against inequality. He said, “Nonviolence is absolute commitment to the way of love. Love is not emotional bashing; it is not empty sentimentalism. It is the active outpouring of one’s whole being into the being of another.” Dr. Martin Luther King knew that equality could never be won through violence, because you cannot force change into the heart of another. Instead, he shared his dream of a time when children of different races could play together. He talked of a time when peaceful co-existence would replace suspicion and contempt. That dream is alive. I see it each time I walk onto the MAC campus and see the diversity of our students. We have children of all races, colors, creeds, and nationalities. Bi-racial children that blend the best of two worlds. Most important is that you can see those students talking, interacting and supporting one another. Is it perfect? No, but then nothing is perfect. However, it is the fulfillment of a dream. At MAC, we celebrate and embrace our diversity. Our diversity defines who we are as a campus and as a community. Regardless of who we are, where we came from, or what our background, we are all Brahmas. We should never take that for granted. I realize the importance of Dr. King’s dream, and the fact that it required not just opportunity but education and character to seize and empower change. Dr. King said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Dr. King gave the "I have a dream" speech, because it is our dreams that change the course of history. May we never forget the dream! I hope you all had a great holiday. Go Brahmas!

NEW SIGNS – This Thursday we will have new directional signs installed. They will be a beautiful and functional addition to our campus. These signs are a much needed and appreciated gift from out MAC PTSA. The signs will clearly mark the entrance and exit, as well as the way to the athletic fields. I want to extend thanks to our Brahma PTSA for their wonderful gift. Special thanks to Belle Watson for all of her hard work, and to our NEISD construction management for their support. Go Brahma PTSA!

Here is all the news for the week:

ANNOUNCEMENTS-

STUDENT RANK INFORMATION – NEISD released the second, fourth, and seventh semester ranks to our high school students on Friday, January 18, 2019. Sophomores receive their second semester rank, which includes the two semesters of course work completed in their freshman year. Juniors receive their fourth semester rank, which includes the four semesters of course work completed in their freshman and sophomore years. Seniors receive their final seventh semester rank, which includes all completed course work through December 21, 2018.

Your child’s rank is posted to his/her transcript, which can be viewed in the Skyward Student Access and Parent Access under the Portfolio tile. Students may also go to the Counseling Office to receive their rank.

EOC TESTING DATES - NEISD High School students are administered, and must pass, five End-Of Course (EOC) exams to satisfy the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) requirements to graduate. The five EOC exams are: English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology and U.S. History. This Spring the STAAR/EOC exams will be administered on the following days:

April 9 – English I

April 11 – English II

May 6 – Algebra I

May 7 – Biology

May 8 – US History

Please see the attached letters (provided in both English and Spanish) regarding these assessments.

EMERGENCY EPI PEN – Beginning Tuesday, January 22, 2019, trained campus personnel will be able to administer an epinephrine injection in an emergency situation.

This does not replace the Epi pens provided for students who may require access to an epinephrine injection. Parents are expected to provide those pens to the school as always. Attached are letter in English and Spanish, from Dr. Gottardy.

PTA REFLECTIONS – MacArthur had one winner in the NEISD Council of PTA’s Reflections contest. Congratulations to Elie Zinsmeister, who received the Overall Award of Excellence in Literature. Elie’s work advanced to the State competition in April. Elie will be recognized at the District level awards on March 5th at Krueger Middle School. Way to go Elie!

SCHOOL BUS RIDERS - Please be aware, there is a “School Bus Transportation Guideline” that all NEISD schools must follow.  For this reason, and the safety of all our students, we cannot allow students to randomly ride a different school bus to a friend or relative’s house.  If there is an emergency, we must have a written note signed by parent or guardian, explaining the reason for the request. Written requests must be turned in to the Main Office as soon as possible, as we must still call to confirm that it is a valid request. Processing can take some time, so it cannot be done at the bus circle during afternoon departure.  When emergencies do come up, we will try our best to assist. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

CLEAR BACKPACKS - All students are still required to carry clear backpacks. In spite of rumors to the contrary, this has not changed. Students are still required to carry only CLEAR BACKPACKS. Non-clear backpacks are subject to being confiscated. It is very important that you remind your child of this requirement.

EMERGENCY UPDATES - Parents should check Skyward Family Access to make sure that emergency pickup contacts are current and correct.

MAC SENIORS -

HONOR GRAD INFORMATION - Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to distribute Honor Graduate information this past Friday as planned. Counselors will notify students of Senior Honor Graduate status at a later date. I will notify you when we are able to release that information to the students.

"Fri-to" Be A Second Semester Senior Celebration Lunch - On Friday, January 25 the Senior Class will be serving Frito Pies and Hot Cocoa during all three lunch periods.  This event is open to Seniors who have paid their dues by January 24.  Come celebrate your final semester of high school in the bus circle during your lunch!

MAC YEARBOOK - The yearbook is a great way for your teen to remember this year’s events at Mac. MAC BAND – The weekend of January 11th was a great weekend for MAC band. Congratulations to Aaron Lira on his second selection to the TMEA All-State band as a percussionist!  Aaron received three of five first place votes in the room and ranked first out of all percussionist in our Area.  Less than 3% of auditioning students ever make it this far in the process, and we have been fortunate to have at least one MacArthur representative each of the last three years.  It was an incredible weekend of auditions, with our other four potential students receiving very high marks, including freshmen Zane Laijas who received first alternate (runner up) on the oboe.  The future is looking bright for the Brahma Band program! Go Brahma Band!

MAC PFC – Congratulations to PFC, the MAC varsity a cappella group, and part of the MAC Choir program. PFC was selected to open for Dcappella at the Majestic Theater on Jan 29th at 7:00 PM. They were chosen after posting several videos on Instagram. For many of these students, it will be their first time performing in a professional theater. Matt Woodward, one of the directors of PFC, says, ”Any opportunity to see contemporary a cappella in Texas is nice, but getting to see a great group on a great stage AND get to open for them is beyond our expectation. It’s an incredible learning opportunity for our students.” Lindsay Kutac, senior, says, “The Majestic Theatre is a place where artists I have been awed and inspired by have performed before my very eyes. The idea that I’ll be performing on the same stage, and PFC could be a group that awes and inspires others is incredible. I’m absolutely floored.” Congratulations to our Brahma PFC, and to our Directors, Matt Woodward and Anna Gann. Go Brahma PFC!

MAC CHEER AND DANCE – Cheer and Dance Tryouts are right around the corner. Current 8th through 11th graders can try out for Cheerleader and JV Lassie Dance Team.
