SUBJECT: Precast Concrete Diaphragm Research Program

Dear Dr. McCabe:

This letter is to confirm the participation of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) in the joint research initiative “Development of a Seismic Design Methodology for Precast Diaphragms” with a university consortium comprised of the University of Arizona (UA), the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Lehigh University (LU). The consortium is seeking funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) program to support this long-term interdisciplinary university-industry research effort. The industry co-investigator identified for this effort is Dr. S.K. Ghosh, of S.K. Ghosh Associates, Inc (Northbrook, IL) and special consultant to PCI.

Toward that effort, PCI will provide $200,000 in direct funding for the research program (awarded to UA for distribution). We are also committing $60,000 in travel and logistical support for the industry members to attend joint research meetings and site visits over a three year period and $75,000 to cover the consulting services to the project provided by Dr. Ghosh and others. Finally, PCI producer members are providing $88,000 worth of specimens for the experimental program.

The industry researchers, partners and advisors will include selected PCI staff, PCI producer members, and PCI R&D committee members. An Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) will provide close industry oversight and expertise in the planning, execution and interpretation phases (See attached list A). The direct industry interaction with the academic researchers will occur through the Diaphragm Seismic Design Methodology (DSDM) Task Group comprised of a subset of the IAP (See attached list B). The DSDM Task Group will be led by Dr. Ghosh.
