Creating a Sentence Starter and Word Bank Activity with Pictures

Introduction

Sentence frames (sometimes called pattern sentences) are widely used by teachers to support writing. This tutorial shows you how to create a sentence frame activity in Clicker.

This tutorial assumes...

? Basic computer skills. ? You have experience adding pictures to a Clicker grid using a Quick Wizard

Matching or Picture Word Bank. ? You know how to use a Clicker grid once it's made.

Learning Objectives

Completion of this tutorial will give you experience with the following: ? Creating a new Sentence Starter grid. ? Setting the grid properties in Clicker Sets to automatically use additional symbols sets such as the PCS metasymbols. ? Editing the grid to add the sentence starter, words with pictures, and punctuation.

Case Study

Thomas is a grade 2 student with cognitive challenges who is an emergent writer. The class is studying Weather and recording a sentence about the weather every day in a weather journal. The teacher would like to include Thomas in this activity. With the help of a Clicker Sentence Starter grid with picture support, Thomas will be able to both write his daily sentence and read it back.

Create a Sentence Starter Activity

To create a new Sentence Starter Activity using the Clicker6 Quick Wizard:

? Launch Clicker6 ? From the Quick Start screen

choose Make a Clicker Set.

Tip: From any Clicker6 document, you can also choose Clicker Set, New Clicker Set from the top menu.

From the Templates list, choose Writing Frames.

On the right-hand side of the screen, use

the arrow keys to choose the number of

grids you would like to create and the

number of rows and columns you would like in each grid.

If you check Use Tabs, each grid will have its

Edit and Save Your Grid(s)

Clicker creates a blank grid. To edit your

grid: ?

Click Edit Clicker Set in the lower

left hand corner of your screen.

It will be much easier to add pictures to

the grid if you use Instant Pictures in the grid cells. To enable instant pictures:

? Click Properties on the lower left

of your screen.

In the Clicker Set Properties dialogue

box on the Media Tab:

? Check Use Instant Pictures in

cells

? Check PCS Symbols

? With PCS Symbols selected, use

the arrow keys to move it to the

top of the list. In searching for

symbols, Clicker will first look for

symbols in the PCS symbol set.

? Click OK.

Tip: You can also register folders of your own photos to use.

Clicker returns to the main Edit Mode

screen. To edit the Sentence Starter:

? Hold down the Shift Key ? Left-mouse click in the

Sentence Frame

? Type your Sentence Starter

? Click Enter.

To edit each cell on the grid:

? Hold down the Shift Key

? Left-mouse click in the cell

? Type your word or phrase ? Click Enter (or Tab to quickly

move to the next cell)

? Repeat to fill each cell with

weather words.

If you don't like Clicker's picture

selection, you can edit the picture:

? Click the cell to select it

? Click the Picture icon on the

Appearance Tab

? Choose Browse to find a picture

in the symbol sets or on your

computer

? Choose Paint to create your own

picture using drawing or stamping

tools

? Choose Take photo with

webcam... to use the computer's

camera

? Choose Add picture from another

cell to use a picture already in the

gridset

You may want to add punctuation such

as a period to your grid. To add a

period, for example:

? Hold down the Shift Key ? Left-mouse click in the cell

? Type a period

? Drag over the period with the

mouse to select it.

?

A set of text options will now be visible

on the Appearance Tab. To enlarge the

period on the grid:

? From the drop down font size

menu, choose 72.

Your finished grid will look something like

Remember to save your grid: ? Under Clicker Set in the top menu, choose Save Clicker Set. ? Give your new grid a name ? Click Save
