EDU 222ELA LessonDiscipline/Subject: ELA/Opinion Writing Grade level:2Lesson Type:Whole Group/ IndependentApproximate length of lesson: 40 minutesTopicWriting Opinion PiecesRationale It is a necessary life skill for students to be able to state their opinions, what they believe to others. They must be able to provide reasons to back up their thoughts. MA Curriculum Framework(s)Standard: 2.W.1: Write opinion pieces that introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.Essential Question Based on the physical characteristics, which continent would you like to live on? Why?Instructional Objective(s)Students will be able to write an opinion piece and create a Pixie presentation on which continent they would want to live on, and provide 2 reasons why, based on the continent’s physical characteristics. WIDA Standard(s) The Language of Language ArtsLanguage Domain(s)Writing and SpeakingLanguage Objective(s): Writing Students at ELD level 3 will be able to form simple sentences in English with the support of sentence starters.Students at ELD level 5 will be able to compose a series of sentences in English.SpeakingStudents at ELD level 3 will be able to express their feelings in English.Students at ELD level 5 will be able to express and support their ideas with examples in English.Assessment Measure(s) I will evaluate students’ Pixie presentations using the rubric created specifically for this project Materials & TechnologiesMaterials: Word WallGraphic OrganizerPencilsTechnology:Google Classroom (Class Code: jyx7z2m)YouTube Video Computers and HeadphonesPixie Application Key Content Vocabulary? Opinion: What you think or how you feel about something. Procedure 1. Initiation (5 minutes)(INTRO TO THE UNIT) Good morning boys and girls. Today we are going to start working on opinion writing. We are going to watch a video to get us ready to write today. Show opinion writing video… the video when it asks students “which is which”. The video presents students with a fact and an opinion.Boys and girls only one of these statements is an opinion. So only raise your hand for one of the following statements. I will read them again for you. Read the options aloud to students. I will read the first option aloud again...Raise your hand if you think this is an opinion. Read the second option aloud again…Raise your hand if you think this is an opinion. If any student chose incorrectly, I will ask them to explain why they made their choice. I will reaffirm and praise their efforts but see if another student is able to explain to them why this is correct. For example, I like that Bob is thinking and that he shared with the class but did anyone else have a different idea?Have a student who got it correct explain how they made their choice… Maddie you raised your hand for the first option. What makes you think this one is the opinion? 2. Development (20 minutes)THROUGHOUT THE UNIT they will practice many types of opinion writing. They will start with familiar topics, for example their favorite food, favorite animal, if they should have more recess, if they should/shouldn’t have homework and more. They will be ready to create an opinion piece on what continent they would want to live on and why. LAST LESSON IN UNITVery good boys and girls. Just for a review I have a couple questions for you. Who can tell me what an opinion is? If you forget you can look on our word wall. Why do we need to give reasons for our opinions?I want you all to think for one minute and when I say go, turn and talk to your partner for another minute about your ideas as to why we need to give reasons for our opinions. When you talk to your partner you need to be using whisper voices. Who can tell me what you are going to do?Call on a student and repeat the directions. Yes, so your minute to think starts now. Why do we need to give reasons for our opinions?Give students a minute. Okay now you can turn and talk to partner using whisper voices. Circulate and listen to students’ conversations. Whole class discussion. Does anyone want to share what you and your partner talked about? Thumbs up if you agree with (student’s name who shared). If not many students want to share or I want the class to hear a certain group’s idea: Taylor and Kyle had a good idea, can you share with the class? Why is this important? Very good, so we must use reasons to explain our opinions. You know that everyone has different opinions so by sharing why you think what you think others can better understand and maybe even agree with your opinion. I am so proud of how hard everyone has worked on their opinion writing. Today we are going to use what we know about opinion writing and what we know about the physical characteristics of continents. As you know we have been learning about continents and their physical characteristics. We are going to play our Quizizz game (they have played it before, directions in social studies lesson) to help you remember some of the physical characteristics of the continents. Now that you are thinking about the continents, I want you to think about which one you would want to live on based on its physical characteristics. So for example, I would want to live in ….. because…Think for a minute and then you can share your ideas with a partner. We are going to write opinion pieces about what continent we want to live in and why. We will start by filling in a graphic organizer (they will fill it out with a pencil and paper) just as we have done all week when writing our opinion pieces. Turn in your graphic organizer and read silently when you’re done. THE NEXT DAY I will have reviewed all students’ graphic organizers and given them feedback. They will have 5 minutes to make any changes and then we will head to the computer lab. They will all bring their graphic organizers and place them by their computers then come to the rug so I can model what they will be doing. Boys and girls, I have given you feedback on your graphic organizers. You have 5 minutes to make any changes or look over it and make any changes you think need to be made. If you are done, you can silent read. 1,2,3 eyes on me, boys and girls please grab your graphic organizers and line up. *go to computer lab*Please put your graphic organizer at a computer and then come sit on the rug where you can see the projector. Model how to create a Pixie presentation. First you are going to click on Pixie on your desktop. It will open to a blank page. Once you have opened it, the first thing I want you to do is click “text” and type your opinion piece about what continent you would want to live in and why. We are working on computers so remember it will underline words you have not spelled correctly so you can fix them. You then need to draw a picture that shows both your reasons. I am drawing the mountains and coral reefs because those were my two reasons for wanting to live in North America. Show them all the different features of Pixie. How they can draw, add images and patterns using the paint bucket. I am then going to narrate my story. When I narrate my story, I will just read what I wrote. For this part I will need to put on the headphones that are attached to the computer. Narrate my story in front of them to model good pacing and fluent reading. Do a think aloud. When I am speaking, I want to speak clearly so my audience can understand me. I also want to speak slowly enough for my audience to be able to understand me. You may need to practice multiple times before it sounds the way you want it to and that is okay. When I am done, I will click save and my Pixie presentation will go on my desktop. I will close Pixie and show them where my saved version is on my desktop. You will all be turning your finished projects into our Google Classroom. So just as a reminder, click on Google Classroom on your desktop. Log in how you always will and submit it. Model it for them and submit my example project. You can find my example project on Google Classroom and the rubric for the project. Can someone tell me what you are going to do?Repeat what the student says so they all hear the directions one more time. If you have a question while you are working, you can raise your hand, or you can ask someone next to you. Send students to work. 3. Closure (15 minutes)Students will share their stories with the class. It can be scary for children to present so since they have narrated presentations they will just come stand by the board while their project plays. After each one, two classmates and myself will compliment them on what they did well. This will allow all students efforts to be validated and allow students to learn from one another. I will be able to quickly access all presentations because they will all be on my Google Classroom. Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners Some students will be given sentence starters when writing their stories on their graphic organizers. Some students can use a text to speech reader so they can type their opinion piece and have the computer read it back to them. They can practice reading with the computer in order to work on pronunciation and pacing and then record when they are ready. Extension/ Back-up ActivityStudents can complete a graphic organizer and write another piece about what continent they would not want to live in and why. (They will not create a Pixie on it, just for practice)Students can silent read. If students finish their Pixie’s early, they can practice using the different features of Pixie and create anything they want. Back-up Activity: If the opinion writing YouTube video didn’t work, I would ask students what they know about opinions and we would make a KWL chart. I would also give them a fact and opinion and have them tell me which the opinion was. If Pixie didn’t work, I would have students hand write their pieces and draw a picture and then use this to help them create their Pixie later/the next day when the technological difficulty was resolved. It would not be a complete waste of time because having done a first draft students will be able to work faster when they get a chance to use Pixie. Technology IntegrationYouTube Video: This is a quick way to introduce students to the important aspects of opinion writing. It pairs visual and auditory information which helps students to remember the information. It is also short and engaging so students will pay attention and get the necessary information. Pixie: Students will use Pixie to create their final project. They will create a picture and narrate their opinion piece. It is a good skill for children to practice stating their opinions out loud because this is how collaboration happens in the real world. Also, by narrating, students can listen to it back and see if their writing makes sense. Having students create a picture allows them to be creative and helps their audience to better understand the student’s point of view. Google Classroom: Having a Google Classroom will allow students to easily access all necessary information for the project. They can also access it as many times and whenever they need to. Furthermore, it is also an easy way for them to turn in their presentations. SEE REASONING FOR TECHNOLOGY CHOICES FOR MORETechnology PreparationsHave the smart board turn on and the YouTube tab open on my computer, with the video cued up and ready to play. Before the class enters, I will test it to make sure the video plays and the volume works. Make sure all computers in the lab have the Pixie application and Google Classroom on the desktop. Have Google Classroom all set up with all aspects of the project included: the example project, rubric, concept reinforcers and assignment.
