What skills are they using? How did they infer what was going on?Word detective Mind Mapping Create mind map sheets for folderWrite on board/flip chart to lead group discussion - Analyse the sound of the word: word initial sound, syllables, rhymes, other words it reminds us of, create new words by adding suffixes and prefixes (e.g. inferred, inferring).Make links to the meaning of the word: Talk about words which mean the opposite, similar words, when you could use the word, take it in turns to put the word in a sentence.Discuss the word in multiple contexts: When might you infer what was going on? Examples: Watching a film, talking about a book in English lesson, gossiping with friends. Topic activityWord in focus: Inferring meaning from pictures to make up stories Give each student a picture. They must use the picture to generate a story about what happened, using sentences from the ‘Words to use when I infer…’ sheet. These have not been provided as they can be varied according to students’ needs. For example, use pictures cut out from local press, photos from recent sport events, still image from soaps or television shows. Feedback to the group. Each student to use the sentence starter: ‘I infer that…’ to give a new piece of information about the story.
