Literacy Center 1

Graphic Organizers

Goal

Students will practice the process of organizing information and reinforce how arrangement of print will facilitate independent writing.

Basic Center

Materials

• Web organizer (see page )

• Writing materials

• Sentence frames

• Information to organize (pictures, words, sentences, paragraphs)

Preparation

Teacher will:

• Interactively create a web based on a curricular topic.

• Determine and display a sentence frame for the web (A duck has____________. Exploration was influenced by _____________.).

• Model how to generate and sort information from a topic using the pictures, words, and/or sentences gathered throughout the unit.

• Store collected pictures, words, and/or sentences from the unit of study in a container.

Procedures

Students will:

• Use the information provided to complete the web organizer.

• Use the sentence frame to create additional sentences about the web.

Beyond the Basic Center

Additional Center Ideas

1. Use interactive writing to create a Venn diagram along with a summary statement. The students use yarn to create their own Venn diagrams. They then organize pictures, words or sentences that relate to the current unit of study.

2. Conduct surveys with students. Organize the information with different types of graphic organizers (bar graphs, pie graphs, pictograph). Use interactive writing to summarize the information. Students then graph the data from other surveys using the different types of graphic organizers and write a summary statement for each.

3. Use a tablecloth and colored tape to create a grid for a chart. Students sort information based on the current unit of study or literature classifications (pictures of animals-farm vs. jungle; titles of books by genre or theme; texts-features of non-fiction, elements of a narrative).

4. Conduct an interactive editing lesson. Record the key words onto note cards. Students then sort the cards and organize the information into sentences or paragraphs.

5. To help students recognize text organization, take a familiar shared reading text and use interactive editing to identify key concepts. Record the key concepts in the form of an outline. Students then use this same procedure to create outlines using other familiar texts at the center.
