2017 AUTUMN EXCURSION

Sept 27-29

FRIENDS OF THE WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESENT:

`FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT TRAIL THROUGH WISCONSIN!'

Join the FRIENDS of the Wisconsin Historical Society for another fascinating 3-day tour as we follow the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail through southern Wisconsin. The Friends annual adventure will be held September 27-29 and this year we will celebrate the sesquicentennial of Frank Lloyd Wright's birth by visiting many of the famed architect's most famous creations in the Badger State.

The 2017 Autumn Excursion begins and ends in Madison and includes visit to Wright designed buildings in Milwaukee, Racine, Delavan and Spring Green.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: Wednesday ? Sept. 27

Our Autumn Excursion will begin with an early morning pickup in Madison at the Shopko parking lot. (Shopko 2201 Z201 Zeier Road, Madison, WI Parking Lot Zeier Road @ East Town Blvd)

After a short trip across town we will start our tour at the Wisconsin Historical Society to view a sampling of the Frank Lloyd Wright collection. Next we will be given a personal tour of the iconic Unitarian Meeting House. This National Landmark site features as the centerpiece of the building, an ascending glass and steel prow roofed in copper.

Our next stop in Madison will be the Monona Terrace. Wright's controversial creation was

finally constructed in 1997 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Excursion participants will have a special guided tour of the building explaining the history of Wright's dream for Madison. The Autumn Excursion then moves to Milwaukee for a guided tour of the American System-Built homes located in the Cream City's West Burnham Street neighborhood. Constructed in 1916, these homes resulted from Wright's desire to design appealing housing that would be affordable for every American.

After our full day of activities, we head to the hotel where we will stay for both nights, to freshen up before heading out to dinner at The Cotton Exchange in Waterford for a fabulous dinner.

Thursday - Sept. 28

After breakfast at the hotel, Day #2 of our Autumn Excursion will take us to Racine for a personally

guided tour of the SC Johnson Administration Building & Research Tower. Included in the visit to the SC Johnson site will be a visit to The SC Johnson Gallery ? At Home With Frank Lloyd Wright, which features a rotating selection of Wright designs and artifacts and explores Wright's influence on families and the American home. We will also take a tour of Racine driving by the famous Wright designed Wingspread and Thomas P Hardy House. We will also hear from author Mark Hertzberg about Wright in Racine. After traveling by motor coach to Delavan, excursion participants will board a tour boat for our personal lakeside tour of Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes. We will see several homes including, Penwern home, Ross Summer Residence, AP Johnson House, Wallis Cottage and the Spencer House. Once back on land we will enjoy lakeside dinning at The Lake Lawn Resort before heading back to the hotel.

Friday ? Sept. 29

Day #3 of our fabulous path along The Frank Lloyd Wright Trail will take us to Spring Green for tours of Taliesin, Wright's beloved Wisconsin River Valley home. Located on 600-acres, Taliesin has been described as "the greatest domestic space in America".

Our tours will include the estate's gardens and outdoor sites as well as the interior of the house and school of architecture. While in Spring Green we will have lunch at the Wright designed and constructed Riverview Terrace Caf? that is in the FLLW Visitor Center. To conclude our stay in Spring Green, the excursion will feature step-off stops at the Wyoming Valley School Cultural Arts Center and at the rural cemetery where Frank Lloyd Wright was originally buried.

We return to Madison for a tour of Wright designed homes in the capital city. Our first stop will be at the "first Usonian" house, the first house to have a heated water in-floor heating system. Next we will travel to the Gilmore House constructed by Wright in 1908. This home, also known as the "Airplane House", will feature a personally guided tour and afternoon tea. On the way back to our debarkation site at East Towne, we will have a drive-by of the iconic Lamp House, Wright's first designed house in Madison (1903) near the Capital Square. Our expected return time is 6:00 PM.
