Assignment: Write a “How to” (or How NOT to, for fun () paragraph on a topic of your choice. Also create a step-by step graphic with images and text, based on the paragraph (see examples on back). Each are out of /12.

In a sequencing paragraph or essay, you are writing to describe a series of events or a process in some sort of order. Usually, this order is based on time, otherwise referred to as chronological order.

Another sequence to follow would be spatial order, when you arrange evidence describing the details of something in terms of how you want your reader to see them. You may describe something from top to bottom, from the bottom to the top, from left to right, and so on.

“How to” paragraphs or essays, which also follow a time sequence, are paragraphs / essays where a writer explains, in chronological order, how something is done. “How to” paragraphs and essays are often used in instructions manuals, textbooks, science experiments, recipes, directions on labels, guidebooks.

Example:   Write a paragraph outlining how a person becomes the prime minister.

Example of Paragraph Using Chronological Order: The Beatles

The Beatles were the most remarkable musical team of all time. After getting together in Liverpool, they struggled for recognition for several years. Becoming a hit in England, the Beatles soon became a world phenomenon. Wherever they played, crowds screamed hysterically for more. Besides giving concerts on stage and television, they became film stars in the film, “A Hard Day’s Night”. At the height of their fame, they broke up, married, and went their own ways. Their fans hoped and speculated that they would eventually get together again. These hopes were shattered in December, 1980, with the murder of John Lennon.

Example of a “How to” Paragraph: How to Eat a Mango

Mangoes are the most wonderful fruit – juicy, sweet, silky, and delicious. However, they are very difficult to eat, unless you enjoy having your hands covered with sticky liquid and your shirt dripping with mango juice. Here are some tips for eating a mango with elegance and politeness. First, divide the mango in thirds, and cut off the first and the third section. That leaves the large pit in the middle where the pulp sticks messily. Now you have two sections shaped like cups. Score these cups with a knife, in a criss-cross manner. Next, ease back the skin so that the cup turns outward. You should have a series of little cubes, which stick out and can be cut or bitten easily. You can also cut off whatever bits you can from the large core and nibble those as well. Find lots of napkins or paper towels and enjoy!!
