Thank you for your prayers for the 2017 Session of the Mississippi Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. We had a wonderful time of Spirit-led worship and fellowship with our Methodist brothers and sisters throughout the state. We also spent a lot of time ordering the life of the Church, hearing reports on our various ministries, and voting on petitions and resolutions. There was a lot of joy and celebration in the Jackson Convention Center.

Alongside that joy, every year, one of the more solemn parts of the conference is the recognition of UM churches that have closed over the past year. This year was unusual in that two of those church closures were The Orchard in Tupelo and Getwell Road Church in Southaven. Earlier this year, leaders of these two, large congregations approached Bishop Swanson about wanting to separate from the denomination. After a time of discernment and conversations, both congregations reached an "amicable separation" from the denomination. The Annual Conference received this decision, and Bishop Swanson was gracious to allow a time for discussion and reflection.

This Sunday, prior to our Prayers of the People, I will share a little more about this part of Annual Conference. We will then include a special prayer for these congregations and our Church. I am grateful that in the midst of the sadness, we also experienced great hope. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we learn together, pray together, and grow together!

The Visioning Team is seeking good ideas to improve ministries at FUMC. We need all of you to help us! One way we want to do this is to collect bulletins from churches that our members attend over the summer while traveling or visiting family or friends. When you worship away, please bring a bulletin home to FUMC to be included in our bulletin board display in the Fellowship Hall. If you learn of something that another church is doing that you think would be great here, please pass that information along to George Purnell or any member of the Visioning Team. **********************************************

MUSIC NOTES

Hello Church Family! I hope your week has been amazing so far. This week, the Chancel Choir will be singing a new anthem... well it's a new anthem for us but a familiar and well loved song for most, "Here I Am Lord". I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I instantly loved it and know many people feel the same. What is it about this hymn that touches us? The lyrics are wonderful and beautifully written.

I, the Lord of sea and sky I have heard my people cry All who dwell in the dark and sin My hand will save. I who made the stars of night I will make the darkness bright Who will bear my light to them

Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go Lord If you lead me I will hold your people in my heart.

This first verse reminds me a lot of the Psalm we read together this past Sunday. Psalm 8:3-4 says:

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

God, who made the stars and the majesty of the heavens, cares for us more than anything. I have a pretty good feeling that he would give us the stars if we truly asked out of love for him. But God, who made the stars, weeps over his people, who continually choose to determine what is good and evil for themselves, instead of what God says is good and evil. And yet, no matter how far we run, no matter how many times we turn away, God always runs after us. And in this endeavor he asks us, the people who say we love him and want to follow him, to help. He asks, "Who can I send"? And our answer HAS to be, "Send me"! If we truly love him, we obey his commands. His command is to love your neighbor...to feed his sheep. Can we honestly answer this question? Can we honestly say "Send Me"?

I hope to see you this Sunday as we answer this

question together!

We just got back from our

big Shout it from the

Mountains retreat and it was

a blast. While we were there,

our students learned about

the gospel: what it is and

what we're called to do about it. We simplified the

gospel into one sentence: Because of the cross, God

has defeated evil and is on the throne. This idea of

"God is king" is at the heart of the gospel. Sometimes

our world makes it hard to remember that, especially

for teenagers! Teens have so many other authority

figures in their lives: parents, teachers, coaches, and youth ministers! It is our responsibility, then, to always point to God as the one true authority. We should do everything in light of the gospel truth that God is king so that our students are seeing the gospel lived out.

SOS -The youth will meet this Tuesday at 3:00pm for a game of capture the flag! Everyone is invited. We expect the game to last about an hour. If students need a ride to this event, please contact me ahead of time so that I can make arrangements.

CREW-We're meeting this Wednesday night at 6:00pm for CREW! This summer we're going through the gospel of Mark, and we will continue our discussion this Wednesday. We will worship, then we'll play a game of steal the bacon, and after it's all over students are invited to join us at La Fiesta Brava for a meal.

Sunday -There will be no youth this Sunday. Go spend some time with good ol' Dad!

In Christ, Cody **************************************
