Getting Started

Before inviting students to work on a puzzle independently or at a center, review the concept of synonyms. Then, model for students how to complete a puzzle. Show students that each puzzle has three pieces. The top piece features one picture. The bottom two pieces are the synonyms that correspond to the picture on the top piece. Explain that students complete the puzzle by finding both synonyms that correspond with the picture. To begin, separate the picture pieces from the word pieces. Lay out all the pictures first. Then, match the word pieces to the picture pieces.

Using the Puzzles

? After completing the puzzles, mix up the picture pieces and play a game of charades with the whole class or in groups. Students can take turns drawing a piece and acting out the word their picture represents. The person who guesses correctly must give a synonym for the word before taking a turn.

? Give each group of 3 or 4 students a few puzzles. Each group creates a crossword puzzle on graph paper using the synonyms from their puzzles. Groups can trade papers and solve each other's puzzles.

? Pair students up and ask them to think of 5 more pairs of synonyms. Show them how to make

their own puzzles using index cards. Add students' puzzles to the set for extra practice!

? Set out only the picture pieces of the puzzles at a center. Invite students to visit the center with a partner and see if they can write a pair of synonyms for each picture. Then, give students the word puzzle pieces and let them check their work by putting the pieces together.

Meeting Individual Needs

ELL Pre-read the puzzles with students, pointing out

how the words correspond with the illustrations.

Reteach/Extra Support After completing the

puzzles, have students make flash cards for each set of synonyms. Ask them to use their cards for practice and reference.

Challenge Ask students to list another synonym

for as many of the puzzles as they can. Have students write the first two synonyms from the puzzle on a piece of paper. Then, they should write their new synonym, with the letters scrambled, next to the two originals. Students can trade papers with a partner...and start unscrambling!
