SETTING

The SETTING of a story is the TIME and LOCATION of the story/action. The setting may change many times in a novel. Sometimes the setting is specific and the author tells the reader exactly when and where the story takes place. Other times, the author will give context clues, hints in the story, which will help the reader place the story in a particular time or location. In other words, the reader will guess where and when the story takes place based on hints in the text of the story.

TIME PERIOD:

Give the YEAR or tell whether the story is set in the PAST, PRESENT OR FUTURE.

WHERE? (LOCATION):

Explain as much as you know from the story.

• City, state

• Small town vs. big city

• At home, at school, at the mall (give names)
