WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina for the 39th Annual Meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons! Dr. Mikio Nihira and the Program Committee have put together a wonderful schedule of events with many opportunities for learning and enjoyment with your colleagues.

On Sunday before the scientific program begins, there is an outstanding Postgraduate Course - "Managing Severe Surgical Complications Lessons Learned from Surgeons in the Trenches", presented by Dr. Jeffrey Clemons (Course Director) at the Medical University of South Carolina. This advanced course includes a wide range of surgical teaching experiences, from didactics to a hands-on workshop. Additionally, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons' Systematic Review Group (SRG) meets on Sunday to continue its work in reviewing the gynecologic surgery literature and producing practice guidelines for the members of our Society.

The official scientific program begins on Monday. As President, I had the pleasure of inviting Dr. Steven F. Palter to be this years' TeLinde Lecturer, and he will present, "Film and Medicine: The Technological Transformation of Surgery".

ii

Back by popular demand, Dr. Nihira has planned two debates that include, "Embolization vs. Arterial Ligation to Manage Hemorrhage after Hysterectomy" and "Synthetic vs. Biologic Graft Augmentation for Vaginal Prolapse Surgery".

Throughout the scientific program, surgical and educational videos will be shown. Due to the high quality and quantity of video submissions this year, there will be additional videos in a separate videofest session following Monday's general session and the video caf? videos will be available for viewing in the SURGiVIEW Video Room.

On Tuesday morning, breakfast roundtable discussions will be offered on eleven relevant topics. The roundtables are very popular and provide an opportunity to interact directly with experts. There will be industry supported educational breakfast symposia on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Socially, we have planned a few fun activities for members and guests including the traditional Golf Scramble and a Carriage Tour of Charleston on Monday. The Charleston Marriott is near The Citadel and just minutes from historic downtown Charleston and steps from the home of the Charleston Riverdogs, the city's minor league baseball team. History buffs will love the proximity to the Civil War Walk & various plantations.

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons continues to grow as more gynecologic surgeons recognize the important role that our Society plays in education and research. If you are a member, reach out to the many guests who are here this year. And if you are not yet a member, be sure to meet as many members as you can and consider submitting an application for membership. SGS membership details and the application can be found on the Society's web site, .

I look forward to visiting with you personally during the meeting. I invite you to enjoy the scholarly and social interactions we have to offer this year in the historic city of Charleston.

Best Regards, Mark D. Walter, MD

PROGRAM DIRECTOR - Mikio A. Nihira, MD, MPH

TARGET AUDIENCE - Gynecologic Surgeons

PROGRAM GOAL

The goal of the annual scientific meeting is to provide member and non-member attendees with a forum for the latest and most innovative developments in gynecologic surgery. This will be accomplished through lecture, slide, video and poster presentations. Oral presentations are followed by a discussion and a question and answer session.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the meeting attendees should be able to:

1) Employ an evidence-based approach to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of surgical and non-surgical procedures used in the treatment of gynecologic disorders.

2) Discuss the current evidence of the benefits, risks and alternatives of new surgical innovations in gynecologic surgical practice.

3) List the advantages, disadvantages and appropriate indications for transvaginal polypropylene graft compared to a biologic alternative graft for prolapse surgery.

4) Discuss the benefits and risks of internal iliac artery ligation compared to pelvic packing and stabilization in the ICU in cases of continued bleeding following hysterectomy.

5) Discuss best practices in informed consent in gynecologic surgery based on recent scientific inquiry.

6) Describe etiology and pathophysiology of pelvic floor dysfunction including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
