Getting to Know Basic SharePoint

Getting to Know Basic SharePoint

with Sample Practice Exercises:

Although you can perform these exercises by yourself, you will gain a much better sense of the power of SharePoint if you do them with several members of a group.

1. Ask your instructor or SharePoint administrator to create a site and assign you and your team members Full Control permission over that site. Full Control permission will enable you to modify the structure of the site as well as add, edit, and delete content.

Create a practice site.

2. Sign on to your site, go to Site Actions, and select Create. Click Sites and Workspaces, and fill out the form that appears. Name your site with a name of your choice. Append a suffix for your site URL. Under Select a Template, select the Collaboration tab and select Team Site. Leave other settings to their default.

Practice with Announcements

3. Under the Announcements category, create a new announcement. Once you have created your announcement, edit it. Or, if your team members are doing these exercises as well, find one of your team members’ announcements and modify it.

Practice with a Document Library

4. Click on Shared Documents. Select Upload and upload a document to this site. Double click on the document and open it in on your local computer. Make changes to the document and save it back to the Shared Documents folder (all you need to do is to close the document).

Practice with a Team Discussion

5. Click on Team Discussion. Select New and create a new discussion topic. Entitle the new topic How to Use SharePoint (if another team member has already started that topic, then start a different topic of your own choosing).

6. Find a discussion topic that has been created by someone other than you (if none, use your own discussion topic). Add an entry to that discussion topic.

Create a New Doc Lib with Versioning

7. Select Create and click Document Library. Name your library with your last name. When you create the library, select Yes under create a version every time you edit a document in a document library.

8. Upload documents to your document library. Edit one of those documents three times. Click to the right of the document name, select Version History, and observe the changes to your document. If others have edited your document you will see their names as well.

Additional Exercises

Once you have completed the exercises above, you have basic SharePoint skills. Next you should experiment with SharePoint. Create a Wiki Page Library and add Wiki pages. A good topic for the Wiki is hints to your teammates about how to use SharePoint features. Create a Survey and ask your teammates to take that survey. Note their responses. Create a Tasks list and add tasks for your team to accomplish.
