2. China to set up an International Maritime Judicial Centre

China’s Supreme Court is setting up its own international maritime “judicial centre” to handle territorial disputes. China has been consistently fighting with its neighbours in Maritime borders in South China Sea.

China claims a large swathe of the South and East China Sea, creating multiple overlaps with areas claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan.

3. World Consumer Rights Day – March 15

4. Myanmar Parliament elected Htin Kyaw as first civilian President

Myanmar's Parliament on 15 March 2016 elected Htin Kyaw as the first civilian president to lead the country after 53 years of military rule. Army took power in a 1962 coup. He is a close aide and adviser of Aung San SuuKyi, the leader of National League for Democracy (NLD) party.

He was elected with 360 of the total 652 votes casted while, military-nominated Myint Swe received 213 votes and stood second followed by the other NLD candidate, Henry Van Thio, who got 79 votes.

They will serve as first vice-president and second vice-president respectively.

Kyaw will replace Thein Sein who will step down at the end of March 2016 after five years of army-backed rule.

5. Venezuela president extended economic emergency to protect citizens from economic warfare

Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on 14 March 2016 declared a two-month extension on emergency powers meant to help shore up the country's crippled economy.

The declaration will bestow more time on the government of President Nicolas Maduro to intervene in the market, boost productivity and redress a flagging financial sector.

It will also allow the government to take more anti-crisis measures to reduce fiscal moratorium and to tap up funds from the 2015 budget to address short-term social needs.

6. Mauritania ratified 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention

Mauritania on 14 March 2016 became the second African country to ratify the 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention 1930.

Prior to Mauritania, Niger (Africa), Norway (Europe) and the United Kingdom (Europe) ratified the protocol.

The protocol requires States to take effective measures for prevention of forced labour, protection of victims and ensuring their access to justice and compensation.

The ILO estimates that about 21 million men, women, and children are in forced labour – trafficked, held in debt bondage, or working under slave-like conditions.

7. UN suspended Maria Sharapova as goodwill ambassador after doping allegations

The United Nations formally suspended relationship with Russian Tennis great Maria Sharapova as a goodwill ambassador after she failed a drug test at the Australian Open.

Sharapova tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open and has been provisionally suspended from tennis pending an independent panel ruling on the case.

She had started the role with the UN Development Programme in 2007, with a special focus on helping with the recovery efforts after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

8. World Happiness Index : India Ranks 118 out of 156 Countries

India ranked 118th out of 156 countries on the United Nations World Happiness Index (WHI) 2016.

It was revealed by the fourth World Happiness Report 2016 and published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative for the UN.

In 2015 India was at 117 th in the happiness list.

According to the report 2016, Denmark takes the top spot as the happiest country in the world. It has replaced Switzerland.

12. UP GOVT Shows Green Signal To Kanpur Metro Project, Senior Citizen Policy

UP Govt approved a policy for senior citizens recently under which it will establish old age homes for them. The Govt has also declared to raise monthly pension from Rs.300 to Rs. 400.

The policy will come into effect from 1 April 2016 and the social welfare department has been made the nodal agency for this new policy.

14. 7th Governing Board meeting of Indo-German Science and Technology Centre held in New Delhi

7th meeting of the Governing Board of the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) was held on 15 March 2016 in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by the Union Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

15. Earthquake warning system installed at Haryana govt's building

An earthquake warning system was installed at the mini Secretariat building of Haryana government here.

The device has been installed in joint venture with German company Secty Electronics GmbH, on pilot basis at the Mini Secretariat building for the first time across India. It had been formally launched in New Delhi earlier this year.

17. Centre releases Rs 609 crore for upgrading prisons in eight States

The Centre has released 609 crore rupees for upgrading prisons in eight States as recommended by the Thirteenth Finance Commission.

In the eight States Kerala has got 154 crore, Chhattisgarh 150 crore rupees and Odisha 100 crore rupees. Andhra Pradesh has been sanctioned 90 crore rupees and Maharashtra 60 crore rupees.

The other States to receive Central funds for modernization of jails are Mizoram, 30 crore rupees, Tripura 15 crore rupees and Arunachal Pradesh 10 crore rupees.

18. Union Government and Jammu & Kashmir Government signed MoU on UDAY Scheme

Jammu and Kashmir Government has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Union Ministry of Power, An overall net benefit of approximately Rs.9800 crore would accrue to the State by opting to participate in UDAY.

23. Modi To Join World Leaders In Wax At Madame Tussauds

24. Surat Cleanest Railway Station; Varanasi Among The Dirtiest: Survey

Surat is the cleanest railway station in the country, followed by Rajkot and Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), according to an Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) survey released.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi's railway station ranked poorly in terms of cleanliness as it stood at 65.

The survey, conducted based on feedback from around 1.34 lakh passengers, is a part of Mr. Modi’s pet project ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan’.

28. FCI’S Depot Online System Has Been Launched by the Union Government

Depot Online System of state run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been launched by the Union Government to carry transparency and minimize storage losses of food grains. 29. Indian Airforce to conducted day-night exercise ‘Iron-fist’

31. SC allows photos of CMs, Governors, and Ministers in Public ads.

The SC has allowed photographs of CMs, Governors, and Ministers in Public advertisements.

A bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi allowed review petitions filed by various state governments, which had sought a modification of the previous order.

33. Pay interest on savings accounts every quarter: RBI to banks

Reserve bank of India asked banks to credit interest on savings accounts every quarter or shorter than that of the fiscal.

Interest rate on savings bank account is calculated on daily basis since April 1, 2010 and it is credited in savings bank account on half-yearly basis.

The revised interest rate credit payment may put a burden of 500 crore on

banksbut the move by the central bank which will benefit crores of savings account holders.

Public sector lenders offer 4 per cent interest on savings deposit, private banks offer as much as 6 per cent.

34. Bangladesh’s bank governor resigns on $81 million cyber theft

Atiur Rahman, the governor of Bangladesh’s central bank, resigned after $81 million cyber theft from the country’s official account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The resignation came days after the Bangladesh finance minister said the central bank did not inform him about the theft. The Governor resignation was accepted by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Cyber hackers cracked the computer systems of Bangladesh Bank and transferred the money from its account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to casinos in the Philippines.

35. Yes Bank ink pact with Indo-Brazil chamber for strategic co-operation

In the run-up to the next BRICS Summit to be held here this year, Yes Bank today inked a pact with the India Brazil Chamber of Commerce for cooperation in knowledge sharing, consultancy, skill and technology.

36. India Inc first to formally adopt UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

India Inc. became first in the world to formally adopt the United Nations’ (UN) agenda for the world’s sustainable development and 17 goals identified for its implementation.

It was formally adopted by the India Inc. at the 11th National Convention on Sustainable Development Goal (NCSDG) organized by the Global Compact Network in Mumbai.

37. RBI Likely To Pay Rs 57,000 Crore in Dividends to Government in 2016-17

The Reserve Bank of India is likely to pay the government Rs 57,000 crore in dividends in 2016-17, slightly less than the amount it paid in the current fiscal but much higher than that in earlier years.

The amount paid is slightly lesser than the previous fiscal year but much higher than the previous years. Last year, the government received Rs.73,905 crores as dividends from various state owned banks and the RBI.

This fiscal year it has estimated to receive Rs.69,897 crores.

38. Bharti Airtel buys Videocon Telecom for Rs 4,428 cr.

India’s largest telecom operator by subcriber base, Bharti Airtel, said that it has acquired Videocon Telecom for Rs 4,428 crore.

With this, Bharti Airtel will get the rights to use 2X5 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 band allocated to Videocon by the government on April 5, 2013.

On March 16, Idea Cellular had terminated its spectrum deal with Videocon under which it was supposed to buy two circles - Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West) - for Rs 3,310 crore. After this deal, Bharti’s 4G coverage is likely to go up to 19 circles from the current 15.

India’s largest Public Sector lender, SBI ties up with Taxi Aggregator, Uber to provide instant vehicle finance to “driver partners’ on the latter’s platform.

The scheme would encourage skilled drivers to overcome liquidity crunch and excess documentation requirements to become an entrepreneur

The loans could be sanctioned in one day using an inbuilt digital offering.

The loans would be collateral free as well as carry a very competitive interest rate.

All loans will be covered under the government’s Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna Scheme

40. India Post selects Deloitte as consultant for payments bank

India Post has selected Deloitte to advise it on setting up a payments bank and an agreement between the two will be signed on March 14.

The Public Investment Board has already approved the Rs 800-crore proposal of India Post and in 15 days, it will go to the Cabinet for final approval.

India Post payments bank will primarily target unbanked and under-banked

customers in rural, semi-rural and remote areas, with a focus on providing simple deposit products and money remittance services.

43. 5600 wilful defaulters owe banks Rs 60K Crore

According to the data from credit information bureau CIBIL, more than 5,600 borrowers, who owe banks close to Rs 60,000 crore, have been declared wilful defaulters by lenders as on December 31.

The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) is owed Rs 12,091 crore, followed by another state-run lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) which has receivables of Rs 9,445 crore lent to 698 borrowers.

Kotak Mahindra Bank has the highest amount of loans stuck with wilful defaulters among private sector banks at Rs 5,442 crore.

Wilful defaults for private sector banks stood at Rs 10,250 crore and at Rs 463 crore for foreign banks.

44. Hitachi to setup ATM making firm in India

Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions Corp (Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions) has established Hitachi Terminal Solutions India Pvt Ltd (Hitachi Terminal Solutions India) to be based in Bengaluru as an ATM manufacturing company.

The new company has been set up with a capital of Rs 100 crore and is set a target to produce 1,500 units of ATMs per month at the end of calendar year 2016.

Hitachi has deployed over 5,000 units of ATM in India by 2015 and at present, there are about two lakh ATMs and CDs (Cash Dispensing ATMs) operating in the country.

45. India signs USD 35 Million loan deal with World Bank

49. IOB becomes first bank to sell Indian gold coins

50. Nepal to Have Its First Woman Chief Justice

Suresh Senapaty, The ex-Wipro CFO has been appointed as the new Chairman by Honeywell Automation India Ltd (HAIL).

Mr. L.Rao has been succeeded by Mr. Suresh Senapaty. He has been serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors from August 2014 to February 2016 and as the member of Board of Directors of HAIL from 2002 to 2014.

55. Angry Birds character 'Red' is UN ambassador for climate change

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named Red, the starring animated character in the soon-to-be-sreleased “The Angry Birds Movie” as an honorary U.N. ambassador to encourage young people to go “green” and step up action to tackle climate change.

The campaign, in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the U.N. Development Program and U.N. Foundation, asks people around the world to make the Angry Birds

happy by taking actions to combat climate change such as recycling, taking public transportation and conserving water.

Flamboyant opener Rohit Sharma won the prestigious Maruti Suzuki ESPN Cricinfo award for the third year in a row.

The awards were given for stand out performances across three formats for the year 2015. Rohit, who has won the award for his ODI double hundreds in 2013 and 2014, has won it this time for playing the 'T20 Innings of the Year'. Rohit's innings of 106 against South Africa at Dharamsala, has been rated as the best batting effort.

McCullum, who retired this year after breaking Viv Richards' 30-year old record for fastest Test hundred, deservingly got 'Captain of The Year' award for leading New Zealand to ICC World Cup final.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad won the 'Best Test bowling' award by biggest margin of votes for his demolition act of 8/15 in the fourth Ashes Test in Nottingham where Australia were shot out for 60 in first innings.

The award for 'Best Test Innings' went to current New Zealand captain Kane Williamson for his 242 against Sri Lanka at Wellington.

The ODI's innings of the year award went to AB De Villiers for his world record hundred off 31 balls

against West Indies at Johannesburg. De Villiers scored 149 in that innings. Tim Southee's 7/33 against England in a World Cup game in Wellington was the best ODI bowling effort.

David Wiese's 5/23 against West Indies got him award for best bowling in T20 Internationals.

Mustafizur Rahaman was adjudged Best Debutant of the year for his stellar show against India in ODIs last year.

The Judges in the panel were John Wright, Curteny Walce, Mahela Jayawardene, Ian Chappel, Ajit Agarkar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Russell Arnold and Mark Nicholas.

58. British mathematician Sir Andrew J. Wiles has won the Abel Prize in math

Sir Andrew has been awarded the 2016 Abel Prize, regarded as mathematics' equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

He won the award ‘for his stunning proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by way of the modularity conjecture for semi stable elliptic curves, opening a new era in number theory'.

Sir Andrewwill receive the Prize from Crown Prince Haakon of Norway at a ceremony in Oslo in May.

59. Priyanka Kakodkar and Raksha Kumar won Chameli Devi Jain Award

Priyanka Kakodkar and Raksha Kumar on 15 March 2016 were named as joint winners of the 2015-16 Chameli Devi Jain Award.

They were awarded for their work that clubs social concern and compassion with pioneering reportage and analytical skills.

Kakodkar's reports, which targeted on the acute farming crisis in Maharashtra,

were published on the front page of The Times of India in the year 2015. More than 50 of her reports were published in a year by the paper.

The award will be presented by former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on 17 March 2016 at the India International Centre, Delhi.

An Indian student Geetakshi Arora is the winner of the first Noor Inayat Khan Prize for 2016, the London-based Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust announced on Saturday.

Geetakshi Arora, a post-graduate student of the South Asia Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, won the prize — which consists of £1,000 and a certificate — for her dissertation on “Goddess Myths in Graphic Novels: Reimagining Indian Feminity”.

Delhi won the 20th edition of the Lloyd Business Today Pro-Am Champions golf tournament.

66. Badminton: HS Prannoy wins the 2016 Swiss Open men's singles

India's fourth highest ranked men's badminton player HS Prannoy won the men's singles title at the 2016 Swiss Open in Basel, defeating his opponent Germany's Marc Zwiebler in straight sets 21-18 21-15 in the final.

This is Prannoy's second title at a Grand Prix Gold tournament, after he won the 2014 Indonesian Masters.

British award-winning novelist and art historian Anita Brookner passed away. She died at the age of 87.

The 77 year old Shehnai maestro, Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan passed away leaving his mesmerising Indian Classical tunes with the world.

Representing the Benaras school of Shehnai music, he was felicitated with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009 for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.

Khan had performed in several countries including Belgium, Russia, Switzerland, France, Tunisia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hongkong and the Philippines.

70. Paul Daniels, TV Magician, Dies Aged 77

Newton Edward Daniels, has died aged 77, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Daniels is best known for his BBC TV series The Paul Daniels Magic Show, which ran from 1979 to 1994.He achieved international fame through his television series

He was born in 1938 in South Bank, Middles brough, where he began his career as a magician and entertainer.

Daniels was awarded the prestigious Magiian of the Year Award by the Academy of Magical Arts in 1982, and was the first magician from outside the US to receive it.

72. Former Israeli Spy Chief Meir Dagan Dies

Meir Dagan, who as chief of Israel’s intelligence agency was widely credited with disrupting Iran’s nuclear program, died, the Israeli government said. He was 71.

Mr. Dagan served as director of the agency, the Mossad, from 2002 until his retirement in 2011.

Born in modern-day Ukraine in 1945 to Holocaust survivors, Mr. Dagan emigrated to Israel with his family at age 5. He served in the Israeli army for 30 years, attaining the rank of major general.

73. Actor Larry Drake, has Passed away

Actor Larry Drake, known for playing Benny on TV show "L.A. Law", has died. He was 66.

The actor played Benny Stulwicz, a mentally challenged law clerk, from 1987 until the TV show's end in 1994.The memorable role earned Drake two Emmy Awards, in 1988 and 1989, and a nomination in 1990.

Drake, who was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was also a series regular on the 1998 sci-fi TV show "Prey" and appeared in several films, including "Darkman" (1990) - as a ruthless villain - and its sequel; as a murderous doctor in "Dr. Giggles" (1992); "Bean" (1997); and "American Pie 2" (2001).
