Job Title: Database Engineer Job Code: Reports To: Senior Manager Decision Analytics & Information ManagementFLSA Status: ExemptPay Code: 16EEO: 01PURPOSE AND SCOPE: The Database Engineer for the Decision Analytics & Information Management department will be responsible for developing, maintaining, monitoring and extending the data warehouse and analytics architecture to meet the analysis and reporting needs of Shelby County Schools. The position will work closely with the decision analytics consultants and our integration management managed service provider (iPaaS) to transform disparate raw data from multiple platforms into an easily accessible data store through the application of a defined data standard. The position requires flexibility, an eagerness to take on new challenges and collaboration with cross-functional teams to advance the decision analytic capabilities of Shelby County Schools.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but are intended to accurately reflect the primary job elements.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Work closely with decision analytics team to help build/maintain table structures that aligns with data standard, delivers intuitive Microsoft PowerBI visualizations and empowers ad hoc querying and analysis of the data by business analysts.Responsible for managing permissions, data transfers, overall health and performance of the integration management solution and MS SQL warehouse in a cloud environment.Work closely with vendor managed services team to maintain structured high performing cloud environment.Identify and execute database improvement opportunities to provide a superior experience for end users performing ad hoc analysis.Develop, promote and deploy stored procedures that improve data accessibility and optimize new reporting requirements. Determine, enforce and document database policies, procedures, and standards.Perform tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Services, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems or similar field plus an additional 5 to 8 years related experience, or equivalent, for a total education/experience of 7 to 10 years. 5+ years of Microsoft SQL Server database administration experienceExperience managing a SaaS environment with a managed services vendor partnershipExperience with Performance Tuning and Optimization using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.1 year of SQL Azure experience would be preferredDegree Equivalency Formula:Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.? KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Demonstrated skills for Web Services environments, languages and formats including RESTful, APIs, HTML, Javascript, XML, SOAP, JSONExpertise with SQL (Microsoft, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.), including the creation of complex views, stored procedures, and/or packagesKnowledge of Ed-Fi or other educational data standard including the supporting definitions and structuresMust have a strong understanding of database schema object management, data modeling and architecture.Strong background in implementing complex database stored procedures, functions, and trigger in PL/SQL, T-SQL or similar languageExperience with some of the modern relational databasesSkilled at optimizing large complicated SQL statementsKnowledge of best practices when dealing with relational databasesAbility to document and diagram technical systems and architectures.Ability to analyze complex data structures with minimal directionUnderstanding of iPaaS models and data warehouse theoryAbility to monitor and maintain data quality and standardsStrong team player with willingness to collaborateHigh comfort level working on multiple simultaneous assignments and dealing with assignment prioritization changesExcellent organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skillsHistory of working cooperatively within a team environment and communicating with a wide range of people with varying levels of responsibility Demonstrated ability to work independently at times with minimal supervision and assistance.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTPhysical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
