FrankensteinDouble Entry JournalDirections: Create a double-entry journal for chapters 15-22 of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In the left-hand column, record a perceived significant passage from the novel. In the right-hand column, respond to the recorded passage by exploring the possibilities of the passage’s significance. Consider theme, motif, figurative language, diction, and/or characterization, etc. as you formulate your responses. You must record at least one passage for each of the assigned chapters of the novel; HOWEVER, a total of 12 passages must be presented and considered.Thematic Topics:Alienation and LonelinessNature vs. NurtureAppearance vs. RealityJustice vs. InjusticeForbidden KnowledgeAmbition vs. Social ResponsibilityMan (science and technology) vs. NatureMotifs (recurring ideas, images, objects, etc. that support a theme within a literary work):Light and Dark Fire and Ice Nature Passive Women Dreams/Visions Birth/Renewal Innocence/Youth Sample Passages:Chapter 1Text from novel (cite in MLA)Reflection/Response“‘I have a pretty present for my Victor. Tomorrow he shall have it!’”(Shelley 21).From the time he was a toddler, Victor has been instructed to consider womenhis playthings. Furthermore, women must be pretty in order to be worthy possessions. Will all female characters be viewed in this way? Chapter 7Text from novel (cite in MLA)Reflection/Response“Alas! I had turned loose into the world a depraved wretch whose delight was in carnage and misery; had he not murdered my brother?”(Shelley 63).The diction Shelley chooses, “depraved,” “wretch,” “carnage,” etc. provides powerful proof of Victor’s hatred toward his creation. The use of the exclamation and rhetorical question also support Victor’s fierce aversion. Chapter 7Text from novel (cite in MLA)Reflection/Response“The murderer discovered! Good God! How can that be? Who could attempt to pursue him? It is impossible; one might as well try to overtake the winds or confine a mountain stream with a straw (Shelley 65).This passage definitely reflects admiration for the strength and awe-inspiring power of nature; however, it also shows Victor’s personal acknowledgement of the terrifying unstoppable power of his creature. I wonder if this foreshadows a problem with “stopping” the creature in the future?Suggestions for Writing:Basic ResponsesRaise questions about the beliefs and values implied in the text Give your personal reactions to the passage Discuss the words, ideas, or actions of the author or character(s)Agree or disagree with a character or the authorHigher Level ResponsesAnalyze the text for use of literary devices (tone, structure, style, imagery)Make connections between different characters or events in the textMake connections to a different text (or film, song, etc…)Discuss the words, ideas, or actions of the author or character(s) Consider an event or description from the perspective of a different characterAnalyze a passage and its relationship to the story as a wholeThe following are possible starter sentences for your response to quoted passages in your journal:I do not understand…I notice that…I now understand…I think the setting is important because…I think the relationship between ________ and ________ is interesting because…I really like this (idea, person, attitude, etc.) because…Something I noticed (appreciated, wondered, etc.) is…This quote explores the ideas of…Rubric:A?
