Ordeal of the 179th RCT

Salerno Invasion - September 11, 1943

MG Troy H. Middleton vs. General der Panzertruppen Walter Fries

Start time: Americans have first turn movement and combative action. During the previous night they completed and rested from a night march passing medieval village of Persano, heading for their Ponte-Sele and Serre height objectives.

End time: 12 turns or if during scenario play no German or American combat or weapon platoons exist on either tabletop sector.

Special scenario rules: All German and American national characteristics Flames of War rules apply.

American movement toward Persano restricted. No American platoon can advance towards Persano during turn one or two unless a German unit opens fire upon them from Persano hilltop. They may freely move into and out of the Transit zone boxes with no restriction.

Transit Zone: Platoons exit and enter the Transit zone (yellow zone) boxes by exiting from the tabletop half map square and placed in the Transit zone. Once placed in Transit zone their movement speed is doubled to allow them to shift to their desired entrance point on the other tabletop battlefield. Follow all command radius and movement rules while in Transit zone. To enter tabletop, measure the team base from the transit zone box edge onto the tabletop like any other tabletop edge entrance measurement.

Deployed indirect bombardment capable fire teams, like artillery batteries and mortar platoons, can fire from the Transit zone. Just measure directly from their bases to target and add 12” to their determined measurement to target. Likewise same for German bombardment capable weapons to bombard American teams in the Transit zone. Direct fire weapons cannot fire into or out of the Transit zone boxes. SP A/T platoon positioned in Transit zone counts as being “off table” for tank destroyer ambush rules with carbine teams only on the tabletop.

Pioneer trucks: Cannot deploy minefields during scenario. One hasty barbwire section, taking one stationary game turn with no other movement action, to deploy on tabletop adjacent to the pioneer truck and one engineer / pioneer team base. The pioneer truck carries three barbwire sections. Hasty barbwire follows the normal barbwire rules towards movement reduction, denial, and possible vehicle bogging down.

Weather: Clear with no effect during scenario.

Line of communications (LOC): Not in Flames of war play but the American 179th RCT retreat path passes Persano village, along the Tenura Persano roadway, then towards Ponte alla Scafa. If Persano hilltop village held by any 29th Pz Grenadier platoon they are considered “surrounded” for victory condition determination.

Terrain notes: Follow normal Flames of War terrain rules for visibility and targeting. The roadside tree line gives concealment from direct fire weapons. Hedges and low stone walls conceal all vehicles but allow direct fire across to engage vehicle targets, otherwise block infantry ground level weapon engagement unless adjacent. Farm crop fields provide concealment except from weapons firing from hilltop or higher ground. Steams are difficult going for movement. River is un-crossable for scenario movement purposes. Persano village hilltop is covered with loose trees offering concealment anywhere on the hilltop and buildings are two-story to fire over the surrounding vegetation.

Map scale: Each map square is 12” or one foot. The yellow Transit zone uses special rules for movement and egress from. The “half” square besides the Transit zone is an exit / entrance tabletop square and terrain for tabletop miniature play.
