English II - Holocaust Museum Webquest (Short Version)

This webquest is a virtual tour of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. You will visit several online exhibitions and be asked to respond to the passages you read and the pictures you see. Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, experienced many of these horrors. Answer the questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS!

Go to the main page of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:

1. Click on “Learn About the Holocaust”

Next click on “Holocaust Encyclopedia”

• Click on the link at the bottom of the page titled “Introduction to the Holocaust.” READ the whole article!

a. Give a brief definition of “holocaust” IN YOUR OWN WORDS!

b. What other groups did the Nazis aim to eliminate besides those of the Jewish religion?

c. What did the Nazis call their goal to eliminate the Jewish population?

2. Go back to Holocaust Encyclopedia and click on the link entitled “Ghettos” at the bottom of the page. READ the whole article!

a. Describe the ghettos.

b. Describe the living conditions of the ghetto.

3. Go back to the home page, Menu, Learn about the Holocuast, Online Features, Online Exhibitions, and “Hidden History of the Kovno Ghetto”

• This will take you to the website that tells the story of the people who lived in this ghetto.

• Click on “Introduction”

a. Read the introduction. What was the purpose of ghettos?

b. How did the people in the Kovno Ghetto rebel against their captors?

• Now click on “Invasion”

c. Why were pro-Nazi Lithuanians upset with the Jewish population?

4. Go to Learn about the Holocaust, Holocaust Encyclopedia, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link entitled “Nazi Camps.” READ the whole article!

a. What was the purpose of the Nazi concentration camps?

b. Why was Poland the country selected to establish extermination camps?

5. Go back to Homepage, Menu, Learn About the Holocaust, Online Features, Online Exhibitions and click on Life in the Shadows: Hidden Children and the Holocaust (under related articles). Look at the Artifact Gallery. View the Artifacts and read their descriptions.

a. Which artifact and story behind the artifact has left an indelible impression on you and why?

6. Go to back to the . Explore the first link “Anne Frank.” Look the following answers:

a. What was Anne’s life like before going into hiding?

b. Identify 2 restrictions placed on the Jewish people.

c. Where did Anne and her family hide?
