Quadratic Formula Song

by Jim Warwick

Sing to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”

Negative b plus or minus, the square root of b squared

(Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd)

Minus 4 times a times c

(Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack)

All over 2 times a

(I don’t care if I ever get back)

For there’s root root root in the numerator (point to the root sign)

(For it’s root root root for the game team)

If no b squared (point to b squared in the numerator), it’s a shame

(If we don’t win it’s a shame)

For there’s one two three terms in all in this old formula.

(point to the three terms)

(For it’s one two three strikes you’re out at the old ball game.)

Review

Games

Basketball: 1 pt correct answer, 1 pt for basket made - using wiffle ball in waste basket from short distance away (only get to shoot if question answered correct), 2 pts for long shot across the room (only get to shoot if 1st shot was made)

Millionaire

Jeopardy

Football

Baseball

Survivor

Put steps in order (completing the square)

Groups

Picking Group Assignments (recorder etc.) - Person with most siblings, with biggest earlobes, with dirtiest shoes, with youngest mother, person who lives farthest away, who went farthest away during vacation, etc.

Group Picking Techniques (adopted from Mary Kay Doorhy Hinsdale Central H.S., IL.)

Deck of cards - get one card when entering the class

(all kings are a group and any jokers pick their own group)

Candy - given at start of class (group by type jolly ranchers, suckers, etc.)

Divide class in half by a race for a prize according to ID or birth date or number of

siblings. However, they cannot talk when putting themselves in order.

(Group by making the first four in a row a group etc. or person across from you in the other

row is your partner.)

Premade flash cards - get a card when entering the class (matching cards of the

same category are a group such as: baseball, football, basketball teams; people from the

same TV show - Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Joey; words from the same song; math

problems, expressions, fractions, equations that simplify to the same thing)

Communication Styles – “True Colors”: Fly Your True Colors: The Famous System That

Shows You How to Soar Above Your Limitations with Cards by Don Lowry and

Getting Data

Linear

Book Pass - Time how long it takes (5) people to do:

trial 1: Start with 3 books stacked; 1st person passes 1st book then 2nd then 3rd

to next person (next person has a stack of 3 books in front of them now),

2nd person passes books in similar fashion to next person and so on

trial 2: Start with 4 books stacked; and pass as above

Graphed data will be number of books (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) versus time

Quadratic (and Gauss arithmetic sum formula)

"This is more fun than tipping cows" (thanks to Greg Hill, Hinsdale Central H.S.,IL.)

Time how long it takes people to say the above:

trial 1: start with 3 people; 1 person says it, then 2nd person, then 3rd,

then back to 1st person, then 2nd person

then back to 1st person (3+2+1)

trial 2: start with 5 people; 1 person says it, then 2nd person, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th,

then back to 1st person, then 2nd person, then 3rd, then 4th,

then back to 1st person, then 2nd person, then 3rd,

then back to 1st person, then 2nd person,

then back to 1st person (5+4+3+2+1)

trial 3: start with 7 people; etc.

trial 4: start with 9 people; etc.

Graphed data will be number of people (3, 5, 7, 9) versus time

Exponential growth or decay

M&M's (or skittles)

Logistic growth (see contagious disease overhead worksheet)
