From the Director

Parents/Guardians: Welcome to a new year with the Morgan Park High School Choral Department! This will be my sixth year here as choral director. I thank you for your support that has been gracious and immense. This year we will put on a musical and take Concert Chorale on an out of state performance trip. Also, all choruses will perform in City and State Competitions. All of this can be accomplished with your help. Please contact me if you have any skills these endeavors may require. Chaperones, concert locations, concert helpers, booster club members and fundraising ideas are always welcome. Please return the parent contract with your contact information and answers.

Your student’s continued participation in this program is dependent on their level of class cooperation, participation and growth. It is indeed a privilege to be a member of the MPHS Choral Department. Any student who chooses not to take this seriously will have their performance privileges revoked. We work too hard to allow the misguided actions of a few students to hinder our efforts toward success.

As your student prepares for life after high school, continued participation in a choral program becomes an asset. Students are provided with many opportunities for service learning and to acquire leadership, collaboration and organizational skills. Many universities are looking for students to participate in their programs and will award scholarships to worthy students who aren’t even music majors. Please inform me ASAP if your child seriously would like extra music guidance for college so that I can personally provide it or direct you to various resources. You may contact me at (773) 535-2550 during school hours (8:00 a.m.- 3:15 p.m.) or email me to gwatson@cps.edu. I am looking forward to a rewarding year working with you and your student as we make beautiful music together.

Sincerely,

Ms. Gabrielyn Watson-Foster Morgan Park High School Choral Dept. Director

PERFORMANCES AND EXTRA REHEARSALS

T.L.W. participate in all required performances. Attendance at performances is mandatory. Remember, all Chorus classes are performance courses. The principal percentage of your grade (40%) is earned when you participate in each required musical performances. All CC members must attend one extra mandatory rehearsal (a.m. of p.m.) weekly.

Performances and extra rehearsals will always be announced well in advance so that you may plan your schedule accordingly. Performances may occur during and after-school hours. Absences for School functions/sports events must be excused in advance and require a written assignment to receive full concert credit. Audience participation is required for all in school performances. Invitations and an entry fee will be collected at the door only. There will be no advance sales.

Required Materials

You will be provided with a choral music folder with your name, chorus and vocal section printed on it. You are required to keep a No. 2 pencil in your folder and have your folder daily. You must use this choral music folder to contain all of your music, classroom assignments, Theory book and sight-singing materials. You are responsible for keeping and returning a neat and organized choral folder. However, if you wish you may take them home.

Homework

Your homework assignments will primarily consist of your review and practice of your individual vocal part so that you will be more prepared to sing it from memory in class and in performances. Also, translations and historical background work will be necessary for some of the performance repertoire as assigned. Written music theory and sight-singing/solfege homework, and music history assignments will be required all year.

Attendance/Tardiness

Attendance is very important in all Chorus classes. You are required to be present in class every day in order to maintain an excellent grade. You are required to be in class promptly before the 2nd bell (the “tardy” bell) rings. When you arrive to class tardy you will be marked tardy, and the current MPHS tardy policy will apply. Repeated tardiness and absences will result in your parent or guardian being called promptly. You should make every effort to place a high priority on being in class daily and being on time.

Student ID’s

You are required to wear your I.D. to each class session. If you do not have your I.D., you will be directed to the Attendance Office to purchase a temporary I.D. If lost, I.D’s can be purchased for $5.00. There will be no admittance without an I.D.

Parental Notification

Parents or guardians will be consulted concerning your attendance, conduct or academic deficiencies at the 5th week of each quarter or whenever it becomes necessary to do so.

GRADING FOR ALL CHORUSES

The grade received at the end of each quarter will be evaluated according to the total number

of points received based on the standard Morgan Park High School Grade Scale below:

“A” = 90-100/ “B” = 80-89/ “C” 70-79/ “D” = 60-69/ “F” = 0-59

40% of your grade is earned through performances in or out of class.

20% of your grade is earned through classroom participation/work

15% of your grade is earned through written assignments/homework
